I searched this topic and found nothing so apologies if its been covered. I've always been of the belief that the 12 Guage with 00 Buck was best in a Home Defense role. I'm thinking a top tier AR15 carbine may be better and am trying to justify the want as a need.
Appreciate the input.

It all comes down to personal prefernece.. and what weapon system you feel more comfortable with and can shoot the best.

For me, the Glock 19 sitting on the nightstand is the FIRST line of Home Defense. The carbine is sitting about 7 foot away next next to a dresser, its my second line of defense. (Meaning that if I needed a gun RIGHT THEN I would choose the pistol, otherwise I would rather have the rifle) My shotguns are all in the closet or in the safe.

There is a multiute of info all over the internet on this subject, not just this forum. There is no real answer to it. Its like Ford vs. Chevy, or Coke vs. Pepsi. It's PERSONAL preference.

Oh, and this might help: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=AR-15+vs.+12+gauge+for+home+defense ;)

Here is a link to a huge thread on this board that covered the subject. Well worth reading:

I'm thinking advantages vs disadvantages of Ar15 vs 12 guage.
Range advantage AR15 (but unless its an SHTF scenario can't imagine engaging beyond SG range).
Mag capacity AR15 (but very unlikely to use 10+ rounds in HD).
1 shot stopping power advantage 12 Guage
AR 15 Less likely to over penetrate (have children in the house)
Trying to come up with real world advantages of each and want to get feedback as I'm sure there are others.

#3 pretty much covers it. HD weapons are subjective. I personally keep an M&P9 on me at home and on the nightstand when I sleep. Two AR15s are in the closet if it's something serious.

Dr. Roberts is very knowledgeable on the subject. Look at the diagram of the 12ga buck load vs the 75gr otm (which isnt even optimized for terminal ballistics). Rifle rounds are just more effective on tissue.

Take a look at this thread for recommended 5.56 loads.

The sound of a shotgun "racking" will cause the perpetrator to instantaneously deficate his britches and, in turn, result in him quickly removing himself from the house.

Naw... train then choose. Plenty of great threads (especially docGKR threads) that will help you make an informed decision.

The shotgun is better. Everyone knows a round of #8 birdshot will drop a 250# thug wired on PCP like wet sack.

But seriously though, for my apartment, I lean toward thinking the ar15 might be better. Out in the middle of nowhere, I might go with the 12ga. They are both very good for HD.

:D While slowly scrolling down through the thread, the top part of this quote came up and I almost though you were serious for a second! A nice laugh at the end of a long day. I figured you were about to get ripped a new one lol!

A gun is as good as its user....Hornady TAPs are what in my home defense magazine....my AR sleeps right next to me

I know you were joking, but like everyone else I get tired of hearing this malarkey online and in every gun shop I frequent. They may turn and run..... or they may realize immediately where you are, that you're armed, and take the initiative to shoot first.

While not purely in the spirit of this thread, I'd personally prefer to go with a pistol-caliber carbine. Less noise and muzzle flash, and out of a carbine barrel most handgun rounds are a lot zippier. Perhaps this is where a 9mm Colt AR carbine would really be ideal.

I think reading the thread linked above is the OP's best route (and anyone else who hasn't read it).

I seriously doubt we're going to come up with anything that wasn't already discussed in those 12 pages.
