What are people's thoughts on side charging ARs such as American Spirit Arms builds? Seems like an efficient motion. Are there downsides? The one I can think of is that muscle memory will be out of whack if you have to switch between side charging and convention charging ARs. I'm curious to hear what people think.

If its not made to milspec standards I am not looking at it, period. It is much more important to me to have one that is properly built.

I had a chance to go to ASA and observe their equipment and builds. On the surface everything looks good. Unfortunately the details are lacking. Basically you will get a BM, Stag, DPMS, style quality AR with a side charging handle.

If that is the quality you want then go for it. Or just use the time proven design.

I noticed that from searching, I like the side chargers alot...unfortunatley they only come from manufacturers that I dont care for

If I ever went that route it would be a left side charger

I think one of the downsides is that it tends to dig into you while being slung. Also, if it breaks then parts are harder to find. Just my 2cents.
