It took our police department eight (8) months to get a delivery of Colt 6920.

YMMV

To be honest with you, I have never heard of a Colt 6731; are you sure this is not what you are looking for:

https://www.policeguns.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=65&products_id=5638&osCsid=0e8d8ceab2b4d60747e6d458aef5d6bf

Ok I did some searching and found out what a 6731 was. Sorry for my ignorance, but the link above is for Clyde Armory and he usually will have Colts in stock when others don't.

Same here, and a little more. There seemed to be a drought of them at the time, though.

(14 months for a FN P90, though. So it could be worse.)

IIRC Colt got a big contract to arm the Iraqi army.

I believe Bushmaster got the contract for the Iraqi's. Couldn't imagine Colt worrying about the lousy Iraqi's when our troops need weapons ;)

According to the article in Wall street journal;

“One sweltering afternoon this month, a few dozen Iraqi soldiers in T-shirts and mismatched uniforms made their way to a bustling warehouse here to swap their AK-47s for shrink-wrapped M-16s. The guns were so new they still had "Colt Defense LLC" stickers on their stocks.”

In the last year I've seen a lot of new Colt 6920s, 6721s and 6520s (all semi-auto guns mind you) but have never seen Colt 'stickers' on these rifles. They do come in plastic bags and with a lot of preservative oil on them.

To keep things in perspective it took many agencies twice as long (IIRC) to get 416s from H&K.

Colt manufactures in lots/batches.
There won't be any particular model available for 8-10 months.
Suddenly every dealer has them.
Be patient.

He's right, it wasn't long ago that you could find Colts in a lot of stores, now they have dried up again. If you want one have your money ready when they hit the stores. I was in bullseye gun store in Lawerenceville Ga Monday and they had a couple in. I think 6721 and 6920. Also check Clydes Armory as he usually buys a metric shit ton when they are available and still may have some from the last big order he got. The last time I was in there which was about a month and a half ago he had all models. That is where I usually buy from.
