My 16 year old son is a regular in our local club's "Youth" shooting program. The club has about a dozen 22 target rifles and the kid's, who are from 12 to teenagers, learn position rifle shooting from several instructors. They usually shoot once a week at our indoor range and probably average 6-12 kids on average at any given time.

Anyway while it was still pretty warm the gentleman in charge had the kids out to the outdoor range one week instead. The club has a half dozen or so M1 carbines and the instructors let them have a fun evening firing them. Once the loading and safety stuff was covered the kids took turns firing 10 shots before switching shooters. Those kids shoot over 1,000 rounds of LC ball ammo that evening and had a blast! You should have seen the looks on their faces. It was priceless and they talked about it for several weeks. One of the instructors told me they were going to do it again next year since the kids had such a great time.

Not a big deal, I was just reminiscing about it this morning and it brought a smile to my face. One of those "warm fuzzy" moments I suppose.

Mark, When you think about, we really owe it to our country to raise good kids. Hell no one else is.

I've been slowly getting my 11 year old step daughter into the act with a .22 shooting reactionary targets, but now she wants to shoot for score. Gotta' love it.

Almost had her convinced to hoist my AR today, but she's not quite ready for the transition. My adoring wife who grew up as an East Coast liberal is supporting this endeavor, but when I told her about the spawn almost shooting the "Dreaded Assault Rifle" today, I could tell that more education is needed to get her to realize that the hole out of the AR is the same as out of the .22LR Ruger M77.

Regardless, she knows how much I love my training and that it keeps me off the streets. What could be more innocent than taking her daughter to the range?

I took my 14-year-old son to Boone County (IN) to watch while I attended a Louis Awerbuck carbine class. Louis asked if I had a spare carbine and ammo. Yes, indeed. He put Number One Son on the line for free. This was 2002. We've been back for Pat Rogers' classes each year since. In 2006, he was high shooter in one July class. Big smile!

I'll chime in on this one.
With some pics of course.

She's 9yrs old and her nick name is small frye--------so I had to build her a smaller rifle to fit. I also had to make it as light as possible as the original stock and barrel were to heavy for her. :D

Very nice. She looks a lot like my 11 year old. I'm already thinking of setting up her own rig. I had to laugh when she tried to hold the rifle in a standing position. Couldn't even get the first shot off because of the weight of the Ruger M77 in .22LR.

Not to be a jerk, but may I make a thoughtful suggestion that eye protection be considered? It's a good habit to get in to.

She was wearing mine that day and while she was walking with them on she looked down, they fell off and smashed them. I know, I know, no excuses but thats the story, and I'm sticking to it:D

Normally it's protocol but the drive home is over an hour so I chanced it and now
I carry several pair with me.

I'm putting together another .22 AR for the boy to shoot. His mom is from Queens, and grew up thinking only bad guys had guns. She's been surprisingly open to my ownership and carrying of guns, and has been to the range once with me. She was even supposed to take a ladies 2-day class with Randy Cain earlier this month but illness got in the way.

I showed the 10-year-old the rail and front sight that I bought for "his" gun and he's starting to get excited. :D
