Ok, guess we need a picture thread. Since we are posting pictures of things being shot with something, there are no restrictions on the gory ones. Obviously, since we hold respect for the animals, no stupidity involved.

My last one of this past season. We hunt in a shotgun only county in VA, and this one had dogs behind it, running fast enough it "traveled" another 25-30ft before stopping. One shot, clustered in the neck, of 3in fed fc 00 at about 30yrds crossing an old jeep trail.

This guy was killed in MO. I was getting out of my blind when he walked into our food plot from behind me. I was going to let him grow for another year but he was headed right for a guy's land who shoots everything with hair. That, coupled with the fact he stood in front of me for 10 minutes when he knew something wasn't right, made me realized he was too damn dumb to live another year.

Unfortunately on this turkey hunt the only one who killed anything was an amish guy who was trespassing. He shot one of 3 birds that were headed our way. That was of course, after he fell and nearly shot himself getting to that spot.

You are correct about that but most humans are naturally resistant to leprosy depending on their MHC genes, ie nurses and doctors can work with lepers for decades without contracting leprosy.
I was a professional veterinary wildlife microbiologist before I morphed into a molecular geneticist in my previous life.
However, armadillos are a known reservoir for the bacterium that heretofore was believed to be a strict human pathogen like syphillis.
The New England Journal of Medicine published the definitive article on armadillo-human Mycobacterium leprae earlier this year, confirming what we had suspected for many years:
N Engl J Med 2011; 364:1626-1633
Whole-genome resequencing of M. leprae from one wild armadillo and three U.S. patients with leprosy revealed that the infective strains were essentially identical.
Comparative genomic analysis of these strains and M. leprae strains from Asia and Brazil identified 51 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and an 11-bp insertion–deletion.
We genotyped these polymorphic sites, in combination with 10 variable-number tandem repeats, in M. leprae strains obtained from 33 wild armadillos from five southern states, 50 U.S. outpatients seen at a clinic in Louisiana, and 64 Venezuelan patients, as well as in four foreign reference strains.
We show that a high percentage of unrelated leprosy cases in the southern United States involve infection with the same unique strain of M. leprae that occurs naturally among wild armadillos in the region.
These armadillos are a large natural reservoir for M. leprae.
The genome sequences of the predominant armadillo and human strains in this region are essentially identical, and M. leprae of this genotype has not been reported previously elsewhere in the world.

The armadillos in my pictures are shown just as they were when they fell. I don't touch the things, just leave them to the buzzards. They make me wanna :bad:

Almost as nasty as opossums. I shot one last year that produced the most foul odor I have ever encountered. I don't get near those either if I can help it.

What ammo did you shoot the bobcat with? What did the exit side look like? Did it tear it up enough that it couldn't be mounted?
I am using Hornady 75 grain BTHP and the bullet went clean through him with a pencil hole exit. I was all for getting him mounted as a trophy but the wife said no way, I already have too many mounts for her. I tried to give him to our local university museum but that did not work out either.
He had been marauding my neighbors chickens and I was sorry that I shot him because within a month he was replaced by the other two bobcats that lived on the fringe of his range, so now I have two cruising around.
I had previously discussed trapping him with a Fish & Game officer friend of mine but he told me not worth it since it would be replaced with two of them, his words were right on the money.
For the foreseeable future, I am not going to take out anymore bobcats and just focus on leveling the coyote and hog population around my house.

He's a little guy.
Low lung shot with a 70somthin grain Federal Fusion at about fifty yards. He omphed about twenty foot before he fell in the bushes.
I wouldn't shoot anything much bigger with a .223 personally. Maybe a head shot on a hog.

Was calling coyotes in the afternoon and nothing was happening on my stand so I figured I'd go get my RWS 34 .177 Pellet Rifle and see if I could call in a couple of crows with my FoxPro FiresStorm.
Sure enough, they came right on in and I nailed two of them in a tall pine tree about 150 feet away. Lost one of them in the thick bushes but managed to retrieve this one.

That RWS 4.5 mm pellet rifle is 32 years old and still works perfect with ten shots on a dime at 50 yards.

Son's first deer, he was stoked! Used his 6.8 with 110 grain SSA Sierra Prohunters, combat loads. Hit frontal mid chest, she was angled took out heart, right lung and her leg was back, so the shoulder was broken, ran approx 20 yards on three legs. (he wasn't wearing that blue shirt at the time, he took off his top after the drag back.
He had fun do some cut up.

The first one is of my son. Unfortunately even though he is posing like the great white hunter, he didn't get to take that hog. He was in the middle of full on hog fever and couldn't take the shot. We had zeroed his rifle when he was wearing a t-shirt. With the extra padded jacket, and him being so small (he turns 12 in a few weeks) he couldn't reach the right place to put his head to get a good sight picture. So he told me to. I was again impressed with him. He didn't pussy foot around, make a quick decision, and lived with it. For a size comparison, that is him with my buddies 13 year old son and the doe he took.

Here is my first deer, just taken this year. Small, but you gotta start somewhere.
Bow kill, estimated 27yds from tree stand, walking quartering away pretty hard. Entrance can be seen, exit was between right leg and sturnum. ran 50-60yds and was found still on his hind legs, head and front legs folded under his body. Never thought following a blood trail would be so exciting!

Sometimes a "miss" can be cool. My first hit was to the backstrap, which sucked in that it wasn't a kill shot and it means I lost some usable meat, but was cool in that it gave a lot of muscle to see how the ASYM 70 grain Barnes TSX (http://store.chencustom.com/223_SOLID_DEFENSE_X_70_gr_Barnes_Copper_TSX_s/92.htm) performed in tissue.

Proud to say this is the first deer I ever got, even prouder to say it was with a bow. Not a bad way to start my life as a hunter. I know he isn't the biggest buck on earth, but he is going on the wall for sure.

The first buck I shoot will go above my bed. No matter how big or small. I have only shot does so far. I don't live where I hunt and school and work make it tough for me to travel so I can hunt. But my first buck will definitely end up above my bed (still live with parents so I can't put it anywhere else in the house)

Best part is, I almost got on a 180 class Muley here in the AZ January hunt, but ran out of light 90 yards away from him :( Would have made an amazing fella to hang next to the guy pictured above. Thanks a ton! I thought my heart was gonna blow out of my chest when this guy walked out of the tree line. I am insanely proud that's for sure. And yeah, nothing has ever tasted as good as this guy did. I enjoyed every single bite.

Got this little guy from my tree, was sitting on the trunk head towards the ground looking at me, taken with .22 air rifle. Entrance top of the head, exited at the throat. They have become a real problem around here

The only thing I saw yesterday was a hen, 3 deer & a coyote. The next time I see that yote, he's dead. It ran off everything in the area. I didn't realize what it was until too late & I didn't have a shot on it anymore.

Right after sundown tonight I had the FoxPro Prairie Blaster on Bay Bee Cottontail for about 5 minutes when I picked up a heat signature on the FLIR PS 32 at about 300 yards out. Switched over to the ITT Pinnacle PVS-14 with LDI DBAL-I2 IR 0.7mW laser and shot him in the shoulder with a handloaded Barnes 70 grain TSX @ 175 yards, he spun and died right there.

They did have mange. As much land as we have, there's going to be a couple with mange every year. I don't do anything with the skins. We hunt them to protect our livestock and wildlife. We kill them, make a pile, and take a picture.
Both electronic and mouth calls.

Yea, they'll kill one of our birthed calfs every now & then...not too often.
But we don't have nearly the number of yotes you guys do.
They've got quite a few of our chickens though.
Do you find one of the calls works better than the other? I only have a electronic one right now. It seems to work ok sometimes but I've had a lot of luck hunting over gut piles from other kills.
I got a couple big cage traps I used for some stray wild dogs a while back, I thought about trying to use those to catch'em too.

Just use what is natural prey in your area. Rabbits, birds, mice, kittens if you're hunting close to houses. We only hunt them during the winter unless we have a problem coyote messing with our cattle. Early morning and evening are best. They bed down and lay in the sun most afternoons and are hard to come to the call. We feed our cows everyday during the winter so we pretty well know where they are and how many. We kill 20-25 every year, year after year. Haven't seen any drop in numbers but have seen healthier coyotes, more deer, turkey, and quail populations. I think what we are doing is helping the whole shabang. We will start seeing pups pretty soon and that's a decent indication how next years hunting will be. At night we hear a bunch howling so we know there is still a bunch to be killed. We do it for fun. But we also do it to keep our livestock and wildlife safe. They kill a calf, that's $800-1000 gone. They killed 3 this past winter that we know of, and it was a mild winter. A harsh winter when food is more scarce, they become bolder and will kill more. A cow can fend off a dog or two easily enough. But 5 or more and eventually they'll get the calf, or her. We saw 8 in a pack one night two winters ago.

Yea, Rabbits we are infested with. My girlfriend keeps her cat inside... doubt she'd let me take it hunting. She'd be like :eek:.
The times I've hunted has been real early morning or 2-3 hours before dark. I know they've killed a couple deer recently. Like your saying, I want to go ahead & get it under control before it actually becomes a bigger problem for us. Is 8 the biggest number in a pack you've saw? Most I've seen is 3 at a time so far. Yes 8 is the most I've seen at once. We've called 5 one time and killed 3. That was the biggest adrenalin rush I think I've had. They just kept popping up 20-30 yards away running at us, towards the call.
I've never heard of any wildlife department releasing coyotes. In fact unless there's documented evidence from te wildlife department, I'd call bullshit on that. There were rumors that the Oklahoma wildlife department were releasing mountain lions in central Oklahoma to control deer population. That's bullshit and anybody who says that is ignorant. The wildlife department denied there were any mountain lions in central Oklahoma, until one was hit by a car 12 miles from my house. They said by DNA they could tell it came from the black hills in south Dakota.
Anyways coyotes are a hearty species and can survive anywhere. They naturally migrate to where theres less competition and more food and populations increase until there's not enough prey. I don't know why they would need to be intentionally populated. In some states it's illegal to trap and release coyotes into a new area. Just like its illegal to do that with wild hogs in Oklahoma, and probably most other states. But hogs keep showing up more and more and I can guarantee the wildlife department isn't releasing those bastards.

Well, this is what I know & have heard. It is general knowledge to many people in the area that they did In fact release coyote pups here by mistake. Also they released supposedly sterilized ones that they said would help with population control-All we have seen is the opposite of that.
They thought the coyote pups was red fox pups if I'm remembering right.
We are home to the most endangered species of wild wolves, the Red Wolf, which look very, very similar to coyotes & some say the pups are Identical.
I've been told by some people that they released some coyote pups in the 1990's thinking they where introducing Red Wolves in the area.

I think assuming to know more about where I live than I do is... well you know what they say about assuming and all. But I can only go by what I have heard from The game warden & all the locals. Around here it is general knowledge as I stated.
First time I learned of it I was told by Wildlife Officer Keith Britt. Its not something the commission wanted to be out there for people to know... of course cause it was a **** up that they released the coyote pups by accident. By 2005 coyotes lived in every county in North Carolina. Open season was declared on them in 2006...

Of course there are other reasons the populations has grew, but they was released by mistake in this specific area & the supposedly sterile ones was released too... Its not my word exactly, its the game warden I know and all the locals... I've seen that busters thing before, like I said, they didn't want people to know they ****ed up by releasing the wrong species... Also, I think it was the Feds that released them ones, not NC wildlife...
But the quote of NC wildlife releasing sterilized ones is documented somewhere apparently... That was something they stated their self.

Another friend stalked this one to 30 yards at dawn and in the light rain (6:30 a.m.).
At the shot the sow jumped and trotted 8 yards, then started walking sideways, turned in a circle and dropped. All within sight.

Oklahoma December 2010. Stalked a group of about 12-15 pigs for about half a mile before we got a good shot. Distance was about 30-40 yards in the brush. Rifle is a Browning 1895 chambered in 30-06. Round was a 150grn Corelokt. She weighed about 130 pounds.
I shot her a little high and hit the spine. She fell were she stood and kicked some. I emptied the gun trying to get more of the group but didnt get anymore.

I didn't mean to suggest taking illegal action. He said his neighbors were too close; I didn't know if that meant too close to legally shoot, or too close because they would get all upset that he was killing innocent, furry creatures with reckless abandon.
So, if they're too close to make shooting legal, then maybe a trap would work?

It supposed to travel 750 FPS but that means poo poo. I'm kinda partial to the .22 caliber Benjamin air rifles. The pellets are slow, but heavy. They seem to penetrate better than the .177 stuff.

I use a Crosman 1377 pellet pistol. Factory lists 600 fps and I'm a bit over that now. I did some work on the trigger and the piston and put a cheap chicom red dot on it. Within 25 yards squirrels and rabbits are one shot kills if I do ten pumps and put the red dot on their heads. I hit a running squirrel a few weeks back and the pellet went in one shoulder and out the other. The Gamo "armor piercing" pellets that have a small bb mounted in the nose of the pellet are amazing.
I've taken one groundhog with it at about 10 yards. One shot, one dead varmint. I'd rather have a 1200fps pellet rifle if I do it again just so I have more range.
I tried a semi auto that was listed as 450fps but at 10 yards it usually bounced off their skulls. Any other hits just made the tree rats mad.

Ugg, don't even wanna think about how bad that'd suck. I have property for sale saved in my bookmarks for Montana. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, I'm buying something out there. Just a matter of time.
I've got nearly 100 sections to hunt on in the midwest that I get to about twice a year due to school/work. It blows, can't wait to graduate and own my own land.

Thanks guys, and ya the west is an awesome place to hunt! We only hunt on public land, and we usually kill pretty decent deer every year. These are a couple that my buddies and I got on opening day of the muzzle loader hunt a year or so ago.
If you're willing to get off the roads and trails a ways and put in a little effort, there are still some awesome deer on public land.

I'm guiding a hunt this Sat near our coast. We'll hunting in a managed impoundment. Should be a good mix of ducks. Widgeon, Gadwall, Teal and even a few Black Ducks have been using this impoundment. Hopefully it turns out to be a good hunt.
Sounds like it will make for a great hunt. I'll look forward to those pics. :) Where I hunt (desert river), we have to work for them. I think our best day (wife's brother) was like 7 or 8 ducks between us a few seasons ago. I don't care if I only get one as long as I'm out there and shooting at something.;)

Those were all killed yesterday during a calling contest me and my brother hunted in. Also got one with a shotgun.
With our 6.8 SPC, anything within 200 yards I feel 'comfotable' with. The one I shot in the head was at 240~. Any further than that and I really don't like to shoot, but I still will as I know the 6.8 still has devastating power that far out. I have a 200 yard zero so at 300 I'm at about a 10" drop, just aim a little above the back of the coyote. However most of our shots are 15 yards to 150 yards, money shots with the 6.8.
We were having issues with coyotes running off even after good hits with .223 and .22-250. We switched to the 6.8 SPC and .243 and those issues have gone away. If 6.8 wasn't so scarce or expensive, I would be converting all my AR's to the caliber. An SBR 6.8 SPC would my ideal HD weapon. Our AAC SDN-6's are currently pending, due apporval in a month.

From what I've read, you aren't alone in thinking that if the 6.8 was more widespread, it would be THE all-around caliber for a whole lot of people. Seems to be the best of all worlds when it comes to the AR platform. Just more confirmation of that from you.

My new favorite bullet for whitetail. Drove through both lungs, heart and a shoulder before sailing off into the woods. The buck jumped once and was dead by the time he stopped sliding down the hill.
This was in my back yard of the acreage last week. When I walked up I couldn't tell where I got him. I flipped him over and the results were in! The bullet entered the middle of his forehead.

My first deer ever. Went about 6 times last year seeing nothing. Yesterday I saw this one after about 45 min. in my stand . He was shot with Tula 124gr HP ( 8m3 bullet). I was very happy with the performance of this bullet.

Photobucket sucks now. When I upload pics they get blurry. But anyways called in a double on the first stand this morning. Called the first one in from over a mile, took a 125y shot and put him down. He was mangy and really bloody so no pic of him. The second came from behind us and snuck down a draw towards the call. At 25 yards he crossed my line of sight and I popped him. His belly was full of something, had to weigh close to 40# even though he really wasn't all that big.

Drove across the border to the free state of Texas for a quick night hunt. Called in one within 5 minutes, pretty sure I missed. Two more came in 10 minutes later, ran right passed me at 10 yards, killed the first one while the second one slipped into the tall grass. It kept barking about 50 yards away and I finally got a clear shot through the grass, not sure if I hit it either. I tentatively looked but didn't feel comfortable walking through that waist high grass in the dark with a potentially wounded/dangerous animal lurking in the midsts. I'm going back down there after work to search the area. I doubt I'll find anything. I need an IR illuminator.

Apologies for the poor pics. This is our first year processing our own deer. After being burnt by two different processors in the last three years we just bought some equipment and are doing it on our own. So far we have been very happy with the results. It isn't easy, but in my opinion it is worth the effort. At the rate we kill deer (and hoping to add some hogs this year) all of our equipment will pay for itself in the first two years.

Had another great weekend of hunting. My brother Jesse and our partner Alan did all of the killing, I provided a couple kill shots but never seemed to be in the right spot while the dogs were coming in. We hunted for almost 12 hours and killed seven coyotes. We honestly lost count on how many coyotes we saw. Some coyotes we busted walking in or saw while driving down the road, but all of the coyotes killed were called in accordance with the contest rules. With the nasty weather coming in, it was a perfect day and the coyotes were moving all day long. Days like that make it all worth it. Can't wait to do it again.

A team with nine coyotes and three Bobcats won the contest. We knew we would have a tough time with only seven coyotes with the way the dogs were responding to the call. Even if we had killed everything we had a chance at shooting, we would have ended up with 11. Now if we killed everything we saw... If and buts, candy and nuts...

Woke up at 2am last night to a few coyotes harassing my dogs, then again at 6am. My dogs are in a fenced backyard and the coyotes were louder than my dogs, so I knew they were really close. Got up and gathered all my shit and walked outside facing east, not the best with the sunrise coming. 30min before sunrise I hit the call and waited. And waited. And waited.. Finally this male came from the east, and downwind at a full on run. I waited as long as I could, at 50 yards I barked him to a stop and dropped him. He was only 12 yards from the call, lucky I didn't wait any longer. Called another 15 minutes but nothing ever showed.

Keep the coyote pictures coming, nice shooting ! What are the details of your rifle set up? Does the suppressor make it easier to get a double? It looks like you are using a FoxPro too, what call are you having the most success with? I have been out coyote hunting a couple of times this year but no luck yet. We have fresh snow here now so they will easier to spot.

The rifle used to be a Remington R-15. I've since completely gutted it, changed practically everything, and had it redipped. The only original Remington parts are the upper and lower receivers and the lower parts minus the fire control group.

Suppressor really doesn't make doubles any easier. I've only gotten 3 doubles since getting the can but have had countless doubles before I had a suppressor. They really don't know what a gunshot is so a loud noise doesn't always scare them out of the country, most times it does tho. I do use a FoxPro and jackrabbit works well in my area, its all about what your prey is for your area.
