Just need a shotgun to hunt with untill I can decide on what semi auto I want. My local scheels has a new 870 express that to me seems gtg didnt see anything wrong with it, was thinking after I get the semi turning the 870 in to a defense gun.

The 870 should fit all your needs. I have a Wingmaster I bought in 1976, that's still going strong. For a long time it was my only gun & was used for, small game, deer & HD. They're as dependable as gravity.

I've got an express and Benelli Nova. The Nova is pretty close in price to the Express. It's great for bird hunting if you can't afford an auto.

Got 2 870s. Love them both. Boringly reliable and spare/upgrade parts are as common as gravel. My early 80s Wingmaster police with the old school wood stocks is the smoothest of the 2, buth that is to be expected since the other is an '03 born Express.

Save the money towards the semi, I don't even shoot my 870 anymore and you already know you want a semi.

I also would prefer a semi if I used a shotgun for HD.

I have a 870 set up for HD, hunted with it for years until I got a 1187. I had a Beretta 390 12ga that I also hunted with and LOVED it. Ended up trading it off for a 1911. I've regretted that ever since. 870 is all you'll ever need and their is no need in spending that much money for a semi auto HD gun and hunting gun. Chances are your HD gun will rarely ever get shot. I wouldn't spend that much $ for a HD shotty to just set there.

Forget the Express Model and get a used Wingmaster Police trade-in.

Express has too much cheap plastic on it. I personally prefer, and own, and older used 870 Wingmaster. Both are reliable, but of the two, I think the Wingmaster is more idiotproof than the express.
YMMV though...

Using a pump for HD, a semi for hunting, and not shooting the pump much is probably the worst thing you could do. Short stroking a pump under stress does happen, more practice would be much better than none. Also all the reasons you like the semi for hunting should be reasons to use a semi for HD.
