I'll get this started.
Mine is the Savage 99 because it can use pointed bullets unlike the lever guns with tubular magazines. The rotating magazine is also a brilliant design taken from Mannlicher and used for decades until it got too expensive to manufacture and Savage switched to a box magazine. That's why I am only interested in the older ones with the rotating magazine with round counter on the side.
What's your favorite and why?

For now, I've got 3 Marlins...a .44 mag, .357 mag, and .35 Rem.

I prefer the Marlin 336. I have a 52' 336RC, 57'-58' 336RC and my main one is a 2006 336C

I only have one, so that's easy. It's an old Winchester '94 30-30. It was the first gun my Dad gave me when I was a kid. It's always been a great shooter. To me it's one of those cherished items.

The Winchester 1895. I have a .405, 35 WCF and a 30-06, keeping my eyes open for a 30-40 at a good price.

I have always liked the Winchester Pre-64 Mod. 94s in 30-30 its a true classic, light, short, somewhat accurate, very durable. its just something about the old leaver guns...
Mine would have to be my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington.
My Marlin 336 Texan .30-30. But it's close with the 18" slicked up 1894 .44 mag.
Marlin 336 in 30-30 is my only lever gun to date so I would have to say it is my favorite.
I "inherited"(read liberated) it from my Dad. It's a late 50's model.
Winchester Model 71 in a carbine w/ bolt peep...supergrade would be nice too. Wicked round.

Martini-Henry short rifle in .303 and carbine in .450-577.
Haven't shot the .303 yet, but the carbine will rock your world.
They're usually referred to as a falling block action, but close enough I guess.
Marlin 336 in 30-30 Win or 35 Rem with a 1.5-4x or a 2-7x scope. I've lost count of the number of whitetail deer I've harvested with them.

Marlin 336, started shooting a similar gun when I was a teen - Glenfield 30A. I think they are a really good balance and decently priced go to gun for mid-sized game. I prefer iron sights on mine since I use it when I hunt swamps or thick brush. I use a Remington 700 w/scope when I shoot longer distances over open terrain.

An older Marlin 1895 45-70 without the cross bolt safety.
I don't like the lines of levers like the 99. I like traditional levers like the 94 Winchester.

I like the looks of the Marlin/Win. traditional lever actions too, I just like the design concepts incorporated into the Savage lever guns better. It's the same reason I like the Mauser Broomhandle pistols, it's the design features I go for, not it's practicality or looks (even though it does look cool). The Mauser goes together like a jigsaw puzzle, awesome design!
I used to work as a Gunsmith before, and I prefer the Marlins to the Winchesters, just a personal preference. My Marlin .45/70 Guide Gun was a great gun, I only sold it, and my Savages among others, when I went back to college and needed the money.
I expected everyone to have their favorite, it's the variety that make guns so interesting.

Marlin 1894's
Have the 1894C, blued in .357 with ghost ring sights. Dropped a ten point "like a sack of taters" at 75 yards with Buffalo Bore 158 gr. Gold dots
And I have a 1894SS in .44 with a 2.5-8x36 leupold. (silver) have yet to hunt with that one, but I know it is a great blaster! Looks good too.
At this point it would be my Marlin 1895.

I don't really know enough about the larger lever gun market to comment in an informed manner, but after owning Marlin 336 and 1895 models, I'm not sure what could really be left to be desired.
Mr. Smith built me an extremely compact pre-cross-bolt 1895/.45-70 earlier in the year, and while the jury may still be out on how practical a tool it actually is (it's basically one notch above an SBR and one notch below a howitzer), there can be no doubting that it is my favorite. Both of my sons now have "Smith-Built" Marlins too, if that tells you anything. =]

My favorite (it's the only one I have), is a Winchester 1894 in .44 Rem. Mag. It belonged to a good friend and he passed it along after it burned in his house fire awhile back.
I have another wood stock to fit but haven't gotten to it yet. The springs (coil) will need swapping too I'm sure. Another friend recently bought a stainless Marlin in .45-70 and the action on that is very smooth.
I'll get mine there eventually...

My Mountie is one of, if not my all time favorite gun. Kind of funny when I look in one of my safes at Sako TRGs and various ARs etc, and it is a half century old .22 lever gun that is the "one gun".
Once you handle it, you know. It is the perfect combination of wood and steel. It has never failed me, functions effortlessly and without thought. They truly are a Classic rifle.

Gotta be a toss up between the 1860 Henry, 1866, 1873 and 1876 Winchesters. Love those old BP cartridges.

You can do a rail for the Winchester 94 it looks a little different but it is affective.

Henry Big Boy 44mag/special is my favorite so far. Although I do have a hankerin for the Marlin in 45 70.
My Dad's got Winchester model 64 in 32WinSpecial and it's a great shooter but the action is as loose as a goose with dysentery.
Guide gun, 45-70 is my favorite. That thing with some buf bore 405 grain loads will take a black bear out of a tree like nothing I have ever seen. Short, light, great for trying to keep up with the hounds in steep bear country.
My favorite is just like an earlier poster here said. The Winchester Model 94 in .30-30 that my dad gave me when I turned 10. I love that gun and it shoots like a champ after me having it for the last 30 years and my dad having it for at least 10 years before he gave it to me.
Winchester model '94 wrangler. I like the short barrel and big loop.

I am a lifelong fan of Marlin. 1895SS and GG(still don't own one) in 45/70, 336 in .35 Rem and 357 and last but not least any from of the 39/a/s/whatever (drolling over your Mountie!!!!). Marlin's micro-groove barrels really produce outstanding accuracy. I just finish re-scoping my father's Marlin 22Mag last night - a gun that helped to re awaken interest in the caliber in the US. The only 22mag I have ever shot that would put 10 under .75" at 100 - which is fairly amazing for such an affordable and simple design. Go Marlin...err Remington : (

According to the internet, current production Remington proofed Marlins (rep) have been lacking in qc. They say to stick with Marlin proofed (jm) levers. I have no idea. Purchased new in 2006, my 336a 30-30 has served me well. Williams FP-336 peep, XS scout rail - though I haven't mounted the Leupold scout scope yet.

Just picked up a 1958 Winchester M94, better than any current production Marlin and no PC safety. Great truck gun. Now I have a use for the 250 150grn. Silver Tips I been packing around for 10 years.

1895 Marlin Guide Gun in .450 - short and handy and packs a major thump with Rem 405's. It wears XS aperture sights. This carbine is plenty worn and battered after 10 yrs of use and is one of my all-time favorites.

I was at my local gunsmith picking up a new ar lower and found myself walking out with a 94 Traditional Winchester in a 30.30.
Serial says it a 1973 but the rifle looks new. I read a few articles of how awful the post 64 rifles were. But imo its still a sweet piece of American culture.
BTW....I love the rattle sound it makes carrying it around.

Just read this whole thread today and really enjoyed it. Thought I'd toss in my $.02.
I have a Model 94 Winchester in .307 Winchester caliber. The .307 Winchester is basically a rimmed .308 using flat tipped bullets to function in the tubular magazine. I haven't reloaded .307s in over twenty years, but, I plan on loading some LEVERevolution bullets in it next time I get around to reloading for it again.
I'm glad someone likes the Marlin 336 in 35 Rem besides me. I finally started handloading the 35 Rem because it was occasionally hard to find in the stores in Illinois.
Also have a Winchester 30-30 and a Henry Big Boy (think that's the name) in 45 Long Colt.
I think I like them because they're "traditional".

Brand new out of the box, just brought it home from the FFL. I will shoot it Friday (the day after Thanksgiving).
i have three levers. all three a marlins two 336c one in 30-30 and one in .35 rem. last one is 1895 straight stock 22" bar. 45-70 i love them all. the .35 is my fav. because it was my dad's gun, plus i like that round.

Warne makes a 2 piece mount that you can use to mount the red dot on the receiver and still mount a peep (like the Ashley/XS) on the receiver, too.

You are correct sir. Took it to the range today, what a beautiful day, 60 degrees and sunny. Took 15 rounds to zero the red dot at the 35 yd. range pistol range, I didn't feel like going to the 50/100/200/300 range. I shot 130 gr. and 158 gr. .38 spl, then some hot 158 gr. .357 "Deer load" from Georgia Arms. The .357 had a little more kick and louder but still very manageable. Shooting the .38spl was like shooting a .22. It was fun. The best group was around 1" with the .357 and worst was 2" with the 130 gr. 38 spl.
My fav is a EMF Hartford Model 92 saddle ring carbine in .357. Had it about 7 yrs with no problems. Deer accurate out to 100 yds or so. A real pussy cat with .38 spcls.
10 rounds of .357 makes it a pretty good all-purpose gun in my book.

Sounds like you have a great little deer/black bear, etc. carbine.
.357 out of a rifle with a proper bullet, is one of the most underrated cartridges there is. 2000-2100 fps+ with a hard cast, bonded, or other well constructed bullet, is quite a round.

what are some good .357 rounds for hd out of a lever action?

Both good choices. Any bullet that will stay together at the higher velocities from a longer barrel. Speer also makes a 170 grain Gold Dot that's not a hollow point, specifically for hunting.
A friend of mine used the Hornady 140gr. Leverevolution rounds to drop two deers, one at 70 yd. and one at 115 yd.

Just picked up this Henry Golden Boy in .17HMR for the muskrats and porcupines, destructive little bastards, and my buddy has a pack of coyotes and probably at least one wolf bothering his horses. Can't shoot the wolf of course, :rolleyes:, but between the screaming fawn call and the electronic rabbit, we ought to be able to get those coyotes in close enough for good shot placement.

If I was looking at it from a purely functional POV, it would be hard not to pick a Savage 99 in .300 Savage with a nice scope. Its a great combination of gun and cartridge that is suitable for a wide range of medium game.
For me, though, the attraction of the lever action is more about nostalgia and romance so that being the case I would have to chose the Marlin 336 in .30-30 Winchester with a Williams peep sight. That's my kind of lever action.
Of course, there's no one saying I couldn't have both! :D

Does anyone have a .32 winchester special?? It seems like a nice round, especially with the new hornady ammo.
I would have to say mine is my Marlin 336 in 30-30. Its a '71 model and dad have it to me for my 10th birthday. ($100 from the pawn shop). I have put down more deer with that gun than any other and when the time comes (9 more years), my son will receive the same rifle. It's not fancy, not fast, but it doesnt kick much, is reliable, and a tack driver out to 150 yards.
I have had two other lever guns, both Marlins in 44 Mag and both of them had problems with the loading mechanism...always locking up.
And of course, the padre has stuck to his Winchester 94s forever.. And refuses to shoot a scope, although in the past few years, he has become attached to my 336 with the 3-9 on it.:secret:

My favorite lever action rifle is Henry 44 mag. For plinking my Henry Golden boy 22 lr.
My 1979 Marlin 336. Just something about the way a lever gun points.

I've had many Marlins, but my favorite is my 1894, .357 carbine, circa 1982. Handy doesn't begin to describe it.

My Dad had 2 and I loved shooting both.
The first was chambered for .444 Marlin and was his pig gun. I don't recall the model. I have the other, a old model 99 in .300 savage. A lot of deer taken with the latter.

I love my Marlin 336 in 30-30. I just had my LGS order me the Marlin factory big loop lever for it. Should run me under $100 after shipping. I'm planning on giving it a good action job when the lever comes in.

Yup, same story with my Uncle. It was passed on through the family. Once he got it, he was the only one who had the balls to actually sell cuz it was too expensive to do anything with. I don't think I would have done the same but whatever.

Absolutely. A lot of folks are doubtless going to be down on the use as a SAA in this role, but let's not forget that our first allegiance is to accuracy, so it's not as if slower action times are really going to effect the outcome. ;)

My Marlin eats 357mags and 38SP like popcorn!:D Some bullet profiles will give you handups. Long wide melplated bullets for example. It is sensetive to COAL in the 357 Mags. Can't exceed the Max COAL- gaurenteed jams!:D

Browning Model 92 in .44Mag. I have a Winchester 94carbine in .44Mag that I like, but the B92 just feels smoother and handier. I want to find one in .357, but that's like hen's teeth.
Marlin 336 Texan in 30-30. I absolutely love the lines and weight of this rifle. Mine is a '68 model passed down from my dad. There's no telling how many deer have fallen to that gun.

Yes, the Marlin 1894 in 357/38 will feed 38s.
However, I don't think the 357/39 Model 1894 feeds 38s as well as the 44mag/44spl Model 1894 feeds both 44 mags and 44 Spls.
In my experiences, the 44 mag version is also a tad more accurate.
Granted, I only tested both side by side at 50yds...the 44 mag version was much more accurate than the 357...with both mags and non-mag rounds. Maybe with some different ammo choices the 357 could be better but in the 10 years I have owned both the 357 and 44 Marlins...I give the edge of accuracy and feeding to the 44 version.
In fact, I like my 44 mag Marlin the best of all my lever actions. Honorable mention goes to my Savage 99 Featherweight in 243.

I'm liking all the love the marlin 336 in 35 rem is getting. I got mine for my birthday when I turned 16. Fun to shoot but ammo can be hard to find sometimes (maybe I should use that as my excuse to invest in some reloading equipment.)

When it comes to big bears, foot pounds are a lot less relevant. A 270 has more muzzle energy than some .500 or 45-70's.
Bullet construction and sectional density is what you want for bears.

I inherited a Marlin 444 from my grandfather. Have taken many deer with it and it's my go-to rifle for brush,swamp, and anywhere I won't be shooting further than ~250yrds.
Currently has a fixed 3x scope on it, but I'm considering putting a picatinny rail on it and my Aimpoint T1. If I find I don't like the T1, I can always slap a Larue QD mount on a new scope and change it out quickly.

The emotional answer is a Winchester Model '94 in .32 Winchester Special. Its the first rifle my grandfather ever bought new. Don't know when he bought it but the serial number says its was made around 1940. It was the first rifle I used for whitetail deer back in the day.
I also have a Marlin 336A in .30-30 that I'm fond of also. It handles very nice and I'm going to get out for a hog hunt some time in the future.
Current answer in my stable is my 1895 G. Great handy brush gun
emotional answer is my 336CS as it was my first deer gun from my pops.
Dream answer is anything MR SMITH touches.. Makes some of the best lookin functional lever guns i have seen.. Perfect guns for my AO power / compact. i dont have much distance shooting..

I have a Winchester 94 30/30, a Marlin 336 30/30, and three big bore Marlins (.444, 45/70, and 45/70 Guide Gun). The Guide Gun spends the most time outside of the safe.
Just bought a 1991 Marlin 1894 P in 44 mag. 16 inch barrel, ported (which i didn't want, but it is what it is). Nice wood. Going to put a scout rail and ghost ring set up on it. Have to say, I love it. Its flat, short, accurate, and handles really well. Paid too much for it, but no regrets.
Got my Marlin 336 got from my g-smith. He did an action job, trigger job and put a fiber optic on the front. Oh, how I do love that gun now.
Very happy with it. Marlin 336, Big Loop 30-30.

How hard was that to do? I'm ordering mine soon.
I will go look but I think it was just a swap out. I think the rear just screwed into the top of the reviver where it was drilled and tapped for a scope base. I tapped out the rear sight and put in a Marble plug.

These are two of my favorite range toys. Mossberg 464 and Ruger Single Six Convertible. I know this is a thread for lever gun, but one never comes out of the safe without the other.
My hunting rifle is a Winchester 30-30. It's perfect for my location because I rarely get outside of 100yards.
I don't take it out much shooting beyond that. I'm also planning on picking up a mosin soon just for the historical aspect of it.
My western auto 30-30 which is a marlin store brand rifle. Picked it up for a song, gun shop said it was a decent marlin copy when it really pretty much is a actual marlin. It has some history, sold originally in the town where I purchased in 1968 and has killed tons of deer in its life.
My favorite of all is the Marlin 1895 "Cowboy" in 44mag. It's a do-all rifle in southern PA, with a 24" barrel offering plenty of accuracy and muzzle velocity. It can handle warm loads, but not blazing hot. Plenty of power for anything we run into here.
It's a beautiful rifle, and smooth as silk. I swapped one in 45 Colt for this 44 to match my revolver. The 45 Colt was smoother, but only from use. The more I shoot the 44, the smoother it gets.
Running close second and third is the classic Win94 in 30-30 and the Marlin 1894 standard in 44mag (round 20" barrel). Both are tough, reliable rifles.
Looking for the Cowboy in 45-70 as we speak, can't wait to get my hands on one.
As far as reputation, the 1892 Winchester action is stronger than the Marlin actions, but I can't tolerate that safety button in the grip. Drives me bonkers. The old crossbolt ones are tough to come by, but if you find them, snatch them up. Absolutely fantastic rifles.

I have the same rifle, I paid too much for mine too, and I also wish it wasn't ported. But the LTD 16" guns are off the charts price wise. Eventually, I'll find a clean standard one, and have it cut to 16".
Before you put a Scout rail on it, try shooting it with the XS sights. You might find that within the .44 Mag's range, they'll be all you need.

Have you ever chronographed your 24" vs your 20" .44 Mags? I haven't, but I'd take a wild guess you might not see much/any difference.

For what guys are asking for the Cowboys, keep your eyes open for one of the LTD guns in 45-70 for not much more. They made 24" octagonal and half round/half octagonal's. I have both, as well as the CB, and there isn't any difference in the velocity, but they point and carry a lot better, for me at least. Mine also have better wood and finish.

I put money down on a Henry Big Boy .44 Magnum today. I saw it at my LGS (been wanting one for a long time). NIB for 150 less than MSRP. Will pick it up on pay day!
I have both a marlin 336 .30/30 and a 1895G .45/70.
I have the guide gun out the most. XS ghost and front sight, and a scout rail. I have never regretted it. From 2.5x Burris IER scope to irons in no time flat.
Just converted the 30/30 to the same specs as the guide gun and plan on taking it out next deer season.

Marlin 336. My dad bought his in 1951. He gave it to me 15 years ago before he died. He killed a lot of deer with it. I killed a Lott of wild hogs with it. A classic wood and steel rifle.

It was something like $125, but I forget. Might have been $150. I found a smith that works on SASS guns and let him take his time. Did a nice job on the barrel, but kind of a rough job on the stock. That's ok though, because this is what it does with plain, old 150gr Powerpoints

I have been wanting a lever gun for awhile now. I am Still looking at my options but read about the hornady evolution being able to allow pointed bullets to be loaded in the tube. So dumbass question, I looked it up and it appears to be bullet design and not a new part or design for new guns. I was asking because I may be able to get a 30-30 Winchester 94. I know this gun is anywhere from 30 to 60 years old. But I am also kinda of leaning towards a 44mag or 357 anybody use one o the last two on deer at about 100 yards.
Its a round not something on rifle. I have used it for three years in my 336 works very well
The Leverevolution ammunition Puts a polymer tip on the bullet itself so that The tip of one bullet cannot detonate the primer of the one in front of it in a tubular magazine. It's safe for all modern firearms.
As for the 357/44 Question, I have a 357 and with the right ammo would be happy to take a deer out of 100 yards with it. The 44 Magnum, on paper, is Pretty close to the 3030 ballistically. But the ammunition is a fortune compared to regular rifle ammo.
Hornady also make leverevolution ammunition for the 357 and 44 Magnum
That is one reason i was debating the 44 mag and the 357 was i figured they would be cheaper with good ammo and fire 38 special and 44 special on paper.

I'll join in because of your locale, about 25 miles north of where my family immigrated to in 1848, from County Cork Ireland.
It would be the 38-56 I inherited from my grandfather, the Winchester 1886.
Why? Yup, Grandpa W. inherited this rifle from his Grandfather who had used it when going out West on a buffalo hunt, and deer hunting here in Wisconsin.
My Grandfather raised and trained English Setters for pheasant hunters around the Midwest-it was a different time: a man was gauged by his hunting dogs and how well they did, after the crops pulled in for the year. In his spare-time he played AAA ball with the likes of Hank Aaron, was a local PostMaster, and raised his 5 children out of the Great Depression and into this debacle.
It is my favorite lever gun. It's my only gun from Grandpa W., as the weasels had raided his gun cabinet while he was in the nursing home, and they missed the best part of history in their disrespective stealing.
My favorite is the 1886 Winchester.
My mother passed down her Marlin 336 30.30 to me when I graduated undergrad and after I spent my entire childhood shooting the hell out of it.
To quote my father: "people can talk bad all they want about the 30.30 cartridge but it's taken down more game than any cartridge on this continent."

My 1949 manufactured Winchester Model 94 in .30 WCF. If I'm not carrying my Colt 6920 on horseback, it's the Winchester.

Very nice! I just got the 1895GBL and look forward to sending it off to Mr. Smith for the same treatment. I need to contact him for lead time, test some loads I just made then send it while I load some more. I know one thing I will have done and that's buffing the sharp edge off the loading port(inside radius)

My favorite is my '70s Model 94 XTR Big Bore in .356 Winchester, with Williams peep sights. I managed to buy up a good supply of the factory Win 250gr. cartridges, which haven't been made for a while.

Save the brass and reload. Although it's tough to find the heads themselves.
It will be worth the wait.
That one still needs an optic but I still haven't decided what to put on it--or how I'm going to pay for it :D

A Marlin SBL ( Stainless & hardcoated-laminated stock) in 45-70 Gov. ...add a big loop on the lever .... icing, on the cake, is a rail for a scout scope. This is for Adults ..only.
Anyone shoot a 375 winchester?
I have a Winchester and Marlin in .375. Put a few rounds thru the Winchester and have yet to shoot the Marlin. Got both used but barely used. The round really makes bowling pins jump around.

I love lever guns! I appreciate the nostalgia of the Winchester 94. Great old gun. Have a pre-64 30-30. But when you hold, cycle and shoot the rifle, then do same with a Marlin 336, in my opinion, there is no comparison. The 336 is definitely my favorite. Enjoy the Sav 99 as well, but 336 is near and dear. Just like the old 30-30 cartridge.

I have been shooting my Marlin 1894 in 38 special quite a bit lately. I took the aimppint T1 off and like the XS Ghost ring better with the Marbles gold bead front.
Also picked up a Winchester 1892 trapper with shotgun style butt stock and 16" barrel. So far, I am in love. Pics soon.

Hate to admit it, but an early Savage 99 in a classic caliber. Probably 300 Savage or 250/3000. High tech back in the day.
They are stupidly expensive now, wished I had bought one when they were unknown/unappreciated.
Also always liked the BLR in .308.
Would not mind a cowboy lever action repro in common caliber with a revolver. Either .41 Mag or .45 Long Colt. (But I'm just weird that way :secret:)

Can't agree more. I managed to talk Mr. Smith out of a Marlin Guide gun from his personal collection while AC was picking up a 336. Both incredible lever guns. Smoothest action I've felt on any lever gun. The man has skills.

I was hope you would get a chance to have that exact visit. I'm glad to read you both got a chance to wander by his shop.
I bought my boy his first rifle, a henry 22. I have owned a few lever actions and always enjoyed them. This little 22 is now my favorite gun to shoot. What a pleasure to go out and throw some lead down range.
I told my son he could never sell the gun or put a scope on it.
Forgot to add.....my next gun will probably be a lever action in 357.
I've always liked Marlin 336/1985 and even 1894 rifles and carbines.
Currently I have a 336C 35 Rem. with XS Ghost Ring Sights. My son has a little 336Y (12.75" stock, 16.25" barrel). Well, I should say, he'll be getting a 336Y. His current 336Y is at Remington's Ilion plant. They're giving him a new one. It'll be a few weeks though because of the flooding down in the Mohawk Valley.
They're both awesome guns though.

Marlin made that configuration at one time but I think has stopped.
Mine would have to be my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington.
I have a friend with two Marlin .35's from the early & mid-eighty's. Sunday I watch him shoot a 1/2" group @ 100 yds. (3 shots with reloads with the Hornady bullet. It wasn't a fluke. The 2 shots before he adjusted the scope were touching. He said the Hornady factory loads shoot poorly. He said the other Marlin shoots almost as well.
1873 Winchester.
I want one of these or similar Winchester after reading American Gun.
Pre-64 Winchester 94s in .30-30 are at the top of my lists.
