Not sure if anyone else finds this misleading, but if you are making plans based on "MUR-1S (shell deflector only) weighs less than 8 oz. (http://www.vltor.com/mur.htm)" you may find the below interesting.

I am wondering if that was written when they were billet. They are now forged. Change happened around 2008(?)

You can tell the difference on the "sharpness" of the angles and the forged ones being inset around where the barrel nut goes.

VLTOR's 1S weight is within an ounce a normal forged counterpart: success.

I too suspect that number is back from when they were billet uppers still.

Weight has never really been a selling point for the MUR. The tolerances and strength are the reasons that the MUR exists. Good info though. I wonder what the MUR 1A weighs? I'm working on a precision upper build and was planning on using the 1A. The barrel is a 17" SS, that weighs in around 33 oz., so the complete upper won't exactly be a lightweight.

Selling point or not, the information appears to be incorrect, unless they are quoting weight without dust cover and hardware.

I never would have thought of the MUR as a lightweight part either until I saw it on the Noveske Thunder Ranch.

As it is, for the project I was intending this for, I'll be using the Baer and hogging out the takedown and pivot holes to overcome their idiotic obsession with tight fits in everything. Which reminds me I need to start a new thread on that.

Too bad you can't use the Vltor. I'm not surprised that Noveske used the MUR, as they obviously have an affinity for Vltor products. I would be curious to know if they chose the 1-S for simplicity's sake or for a weight savings. Is the Baer upper lighter? Forward assist or no? Just curious what you're working on.

I *can* still use it, and still yet may, it's just not what I wanted and it's damn expensive for no real gain.

Looks like that would be right, IF you removed the ejection port door, pin & spring.

personally, I would not see this as misleading as the weight of the receiver sans door/spring is less than 8oz. if I was reading that spec and then weighed it, I would be like "oh, ok, that's what they meant"...

wanna sell it???

It would seem that if you purchased this unit bare/stripped it would meet advertising claims. Does it ship with the ejection port?

Its seems its heavier to a comprable standard style unit with no forward assist. But isn't it a stiffer/stronger unit? There is always a trade off between weight and strength so its seem to me that its a heavier stiffer unit at the expense of weight. There is always a tradeoff between weight, strength and expense.

Email Vltor, or call them and ask about it. I don't see this is a massive conspiracy, but if it bugs you contact them and get an answer.

Look at the rail companies that give a weight without the barrel nut, its the same sort of thing that gets people confused. Its not inaccurate, but it can be hard for people to figure out at a quick glance.

I just received a brand new MUR-1S and the weight is 8.2 oz or 234 grams. Slightly off topic, the receiver extension fit and slightly loose compared to the snug/tight fight of my MUR-1A. It rocks a little without the barrel nut.
