I figured that since we've been talking about batteries, I'd pose a question that I've often wondered.

Now, I'm not a battery expert or an electrical engineer by any means. But, to me it seems that if L-3 designed an EOTECH around a single 9v battery instead of the current options, they could bring their battery life up substantially.

Or am I missing something? I wonder why no company (that I know of) has tried this. Imagine the battery life on an Aimpoint with a 9v.

Is there a reason they don't use 9v's?

I am not a specialist in terms of batteries (even though I am an EE), but I could guess a few reasons.

1. The shelf Life of the New Lithium Type is probably better, notice that most new stuff is CR123's or CL2's not AA or AAA.

2. I bet a huge part is the terminals. I can see spring loaded terminals on the cylindrical batteries are WAY more durable (especially in terms or recoil) than relying on the standard 9V snap-fit connector.

Just a guess on my part - obviously these have more to do with chemistry / application that just simple power source.

I would also wonder how durable and reliable the 9v batteries are, recoil jars things around. Did you know that if you cut open a 9v battery, there are 6 1.5v AAAA batteries inside?

The CR123 batteries handle heat, cold and have an awesome shelf life. A 9v might crap out in the heat.
