View Full Version : Torque screwdriver recommendation?
Mounting most scopes require a torque spec on the screws that mount it. Too much torque and the scope tube is distorted or crushed, too little and the scope won't be stable. Does anyone have a good source for a torque screwdriver (20 inch pounds or so)?
I use this>>>>> http://www.amazon.com/Wheeler-553-556-FAT-Wrench-10-Bit/dp/B00271ETX4
I have that same Wheeler wrench as per Coreycop - it is the cheapest one out there and works just fine.
Borka (much love at Sniper's Hide) http://www.borkatools.com/pages/atd12/mtsd.html
Weaver http://www.weaveroptics.com/gun_smithing_tools/scope_mounting_kits/
Wheeler http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=718023
I've been using the Fat Wrench as well, and it seems adequate. The Borka got a very good review someplace else on the forum, I think it was in the Precision Rifle section.
I have this and it fits the bill nicely.

For small hand tools, I typically only buy from this company: http://wihatools.com/indexes/Index_Torque.htm
They make some of the best tools I have seen. Warning though, they are not cheap.

I use the wheeler FAT wrench also, and it's ok for the price. By no means a high end, highly accurate torque wrench.
Keep an eye on E Bay. I picked up a Utica 5-36lbin there a couple years ago for $30 delivered. New they are nearly $100.
Thanks so much to everyone for the help. I think I will try the Ebay thing and if that doesn't work I may opt for the Borka. The Wheeler is the best for the price but not quite as accurate as the Borka.
Spend the money on the Wiha. They're some of the best tools around. I use them every day at work and couldn't be happier.

This is a good tip!
The Wiha 28506 is only $20 more than some, and they have a way with small tools that I like. Really nice quality and precision manufacturing. Buy once and cry once... HERE (http://www.amazon.com/Wiha-28506-TorqueVario-S-Torque-Screwdriver/dp/B002QV0FCY/ref=pd_sbs_sg_2)
Hey Doc, that one is a good buy!
The Wiha 28506 is only $20 more than some
Amazon has the Wiha 28501 for even less, only $60, shipped...
Is the 15-80 in/lbs range not as useful as the 10-50 in/lbs range?
I think the 28501 is inch ounces not inch pounds.

Thanks for the catch. You're right... my reading comprehension skills aren't what they should be!
I just bought this for $60 off Ebay

I have the Borka, very happy with it. But, to me, it seems more like a compact field-expedient kit. If you're going to be doing everything in home, why not get something a bit fancier?
I used Badger Ordnance's one piece base and their standard height rings. The BO website has pdf installation instructions (http://badgerordnance.com/wp-content/plugins/downloads-manager/upload/Mounting%20rings%20and%20bases.pdf) which show the correct torque.
For base and ring cap mounting I got the WIHA 7.5 to 20in.Lbs.
Adjustable Torque Screwdriver Sets (http://www.wihatools.com/200seri/285%5Fsets.htm), wihatools.com/
For the rings to base, which required 65in.Lbs, I got a Seekonk BT-2L 65 in. lb. torque wrench.
