I dont think I have ever wanted to go skydiving more than after watching this.

At first I didn't realize he had a chute and was really curious how he was gonna decrease his speed and land. That flying suit crap has come a LONG WAY.

But I get enough excitement in my life trying to pay bills and keep my house repaired.

That's way cool. I grew up around airports and a couple of skydivers got splattered while I was there. One in particular, a woman, hit the ground with a mighty "WHOP" just a few hundred feet from where I was. It was sickening. I never wanted to skydive after that. I still occasionally dream about that, even forty years later.

What is the glide ratio and speed of those guys?

He is what, 5 feet from being a red streak by the balloons?

that would be fun :) and somehow might have gotten into it when I was in my 20s the learning curve to get that low etc.. is insane

cant think how much practice it would take to control how low you can get with out smearing yourself ;)

According to the video above your post, 140 mph.

There is another video with the same guy talking about a "wingsuit landing project." They are working towards landing without a chute.

I gotta admit, it looks like a hellova ride. It has to be cool as hell, but it just looks like a damn easy way to get yourself killed.

I agree with you there.

There is a video of the same guy skimming the matterhorn. He even scared himself he got so close.

These guys have some genes missing.

True, but on the bright side, it would be an astonishingly swift -- and spectacular -- demise.

What is the last thing to go thru his mind as he crashes? His belt buckle.

Thats sick. I'd love to do that one day, it just seems as though the learning curve may be a bit steep.

I saw another vid on those flying suits, the glide ratio was stated as 3:1. I would guess that these guys have to be very careful in their route selection since you don't really have very much choice in where you go in terms of altitude. Once you loose it, you are not gaining anymore altitude.

If you look closely there are other balloons along the route. They are course markers I'm guessing.

I saw a special on this guy some time back. He is one of the first guys to pioneer those flying suits and he really has a goal of landing one someday.

There is video somewhere of a flying suit jump with his buddy from a few years ago when they did a flyby of a bridge and his friend misjudged and hit the railing I think.

Needless to say he did not make it.

I can not remember the name of the special but I think it might have been on ESPN or maybe Discovery channel. If I find it I will post a link to it.

He lives life to it's fullest and knows it could end at any time.

That guy has .50 cal balls of steel !!!

I put a flying man suit on my "to get" list but then I did some reading. I concluded that this is one of the most, if not the most dangerous sports extant. The casualty rate is on the order of one fatality for every 250 participants per year or one fatality per 2000 flights. It is evidently not trivial to learn either. I scratched the flying man suit off my "to get" list.

Makes skydiving look downright safe!

Most of this extreme stuff I think is stupid but this is way cool. A 3/1 glide slope is one heck of a plunge. It would be a lot safer if they could double it.

That is one bad ass video. The wings camber, like a wing of an airplane, which creates lift. That is cool.

I was just wondering about the flight characteristics of the suit; especially as they are related to things like his "near pass" over the edge of the chasm. It seems to me that it would still be a relatively simple thing to trade some airspeed for altitude if extra clearance were actually needed, while being still being mindful of the fact that (a) you might not get that airspeed back as you continue your glide, and (b) at some point, there has got to be a "stall speed" associated with these things.

In other words, while it would still be a challenge to judge near ground clearances at that speed, he probably skimmed his camera crew more of less intentionally, rather than out of necessity because he was running out of lift. I could be completely off-base here, but assuming that the wearer has any control over the flight surfaces at all, this is a plausible-enough theory.

Incredibly interesting, but even as a former paratrooper, I'm not sure how motivated I would be to follow suit (pun tolerated). =]

Here is another clip of Jeb Corliss and his flying suit. It has some awesome scenery below him in some of his jumps.

Check out about 1:30 when he does a flyby of the giant statue of jesus down in Brazil !!

I found the ESPN E:60 video on youtube. It shows when he was doing the over/under the bridge with his friend.

http://youtu.be/UkgJndUtUsY

Here is another crazy ****er doing proximity flying in a wingsuit.

http://youtu.be/vNqx8XZIWnI

Same guy doing more close proximity flights.

Early in the vid he is so close to the cliff wall that he pulls his arm in a little bit !!
