Hi folks, I'm a big fan of S&W autoloaders, specifically the M&P series. But when I had the chance to trade for this S&W K-Frame Model 15-3, I jumped on it. It's the only revolver I own...for now. I've only had it out to the range a single time, but it really is a joy to shoot. The trigger is so smooth in DA and in SA all you have to do is think about pulling the trigger and it breaks (I exaggerate a bit here, but it is light and smooth, as well).

I've shot it with both FMJ and some +P defense loads. Just put in an order for several hundred "FBI Load" hollowpoints. I can't wait to get some more range time in with this old girl.

Here's the porn (I know she's not wearing an original finish or grips, but that doesn't bother me as a shooter, or non-collector):

I donīt shoot revolvers very often anymore, but occasionally I take this model 19-4 to the range and fire a couple of rounds to stay proficient with wheelguns. The grips are made by "Nill Griffe (Grips)" from Germany. They feel really good and I think they also look very nice on a blued revolver. K-Frames are my favorite revolvers. They have the perfect size and balance in my opinion.

It looks rather shiny in the first pic, but it has the standard deep blue finish. The second picture is closer to how it looks in reality.

Beautiful Model 19! I still need one for my collection.

I have a Model 66 no-dash that I will post pictures of, as soon as I figure out why my camera won't download to my computer.

I'm a sucker for K Frames.

I'm old enough to remember when almost every LEO had a K-frame in their holster.

I still have a couple in the back of the safe. I used to own a factory 3" model 66. The ex got it in the divorce.

I'd love to see S&W bring back the Model 66's.

Something about a 4" model 19, and a 2.5" model 66, to me, they're classics.

grew up with wheel guns and you will not find a more inherently accurate production gun in a centerfire caliber than a smith and wesson revolver!
Most of mine will group about as tight at 50 yards as most autos do at 25.
no worries about routine spring replacments or trouble shooting bad magazines.
these guns are very underappreciated by todays modern shooter.
they were the gold standard of defensive guns for nearly a century.
another bouns is you can usually buy them cheap- my last smith model 10 ( a 4 inch skinny barrel) was bought for 165 bucks. It will hold a 5 inch group at 50 yards hand held.

Nice revolver...I was issued one when I started with the PD 22 years ago. Then we changed to Glock 17, now Glock 22's and 23's, and we now allow 1911's, which is what I run now...

I'd like to have another K-frame again as I only have a 640 J-frame...

The first handgun I ever owned was a 4" bull-barreled Model 10 with "Police Department, Lincoln Nebraska" stamped in the backstrap. I used it to send a lot of bullfrogs to their greater reward with 148-grain wadcutters over 3 grains of Bullseye.

These days my only K-frame is an 8 3/8" Model 17. It shoots honest 1" groups at 25 yards off the bench. On days when I think I'm getting good, it reminds me how far I have to go.

Awesome revolvers guys! I'm loving the pics and the sentiments expressed here.

I never thought I could love a revolver till I took the plunge with this S&W 15-3. I've owned a few revolvers (Taurus 66 and 85, S&W BG38), but nothing compares to this older K-Frame.

I truly appreciate why they called it the "Combat Masterpiece". I think my next revolver will be a Model 19, so I can get into the magnum realm.

Load it down to 45 ACP ballistics. Eminently satisfying. Accurate enough for rabbits but clobbers deer, too.

I'll tell you why I finally broke down and paid the asking price (too much) for a 2.5" 66. Ever since I saw the Clint Eastwood movie, "The Gauntlet", I wanted one. Clint's alcoholic, burned out cop character carried one of those. I wanted it more than the Dirty Harry's model 29.

Clint's alcoholic, burned out cop character carried one of those. I wanted it more than the Dirty Harry's model 29. Just a little trivia here, but if you look closely, especially the scene where Eastwood was in the phone booth, you'll notice that the revo was a square butt.

Back in the day a lot of people ordered the 2 1/2 inch bbls from S&W and installed them on their original 4 inch guns. However, S&W did make some(not sure how many, but very few) of these 2 1/2 inchers with the square rather than the round butt.
I believe I am correct that the one in the movie was Eastwood's personal revolver and was an original square butt.

There was also a televised interview with Roy Rogers several years before his death, concerning carry rights, and he showed a 2 1/2 inch Mod 66 that he said was his favorite carry gun for personal defense.
I prefer the round butt on this model and that's what I have, but an original factory 2 1/2 inch square butt will bring a lot of bucks.

The majority of my early police career was with K frame Smiths, and I love all the K's. I found the L frames to be a little more robust and a little better with magnum loads.I carried a customed tuned Mod.586 for several years with one Sheriff Dept, however for most use the K's do just fine. Great classic guns.

I'm old enough to remember carrying one (or two) as a LEO (Now I carry a Glock 22) When my department retired the M-10's and 64's we were carrying they let us buy our last issued one. Mine (M-64 with a 4" bull barrel) is in the vault with a old 5 screw K-22 masterpiece (6") and a K-38 that was set up from the S&W as a S/A only (also a 6") I had a M-64 round butt snub that was traded in when I got a 686. I also have a retired Delaware SP M64 that got turned into a PPC gun. Lots of fun with that one.

My first issue duty gun was a 4" M19. I was only one of a couple students in my Academy class with an autoloader (1911) so Im dating myself a little and all of us trained with the academy S&W"s. Ive owned a gaggle of K frames since then. My favorite by far. I credit Ken Hackathorn for my interest and ability in revolver shooting. We still occaisionally have a revolver day at the range. We have a whole new generation of shooters who have never experienced them and are losing out on half the fun. I would say my two favorites are my 3" 66 and 3" 13

I've only recently begun shooting revolvers having come into a 6" 1986 686 back in May. Decided that a K-frame might be a nice addition to my collection led me toward finding a nice 4" 1971 19-3 earlier this month. I'm already in love with it and has one, if not the nicest double action triggers I've ever used.

The guy I picked it up from said it was very accurate. I have been wanting a model 10 or 64 (same but stainless right?) for a while. I feel they are a fantastic woods and defense handgun. I had a model 15 that was really nice but it always seemed like the rear sight would eventually drift a little.

I love the K-frame's smooth action but I could never get the trigger reach I wanted. I always ended up with an offset grip just to get the first joint of my finger on the trigger. This was with a round butt and service stocks. Shooting with a two-handed grip, it wasn't a problem. SHO was a real pain in terms of getting consistency.

I liked the size of the Detective Special/Police Positive Special family better but I never got along with Colt's idea of a DA pull. If Smith could make a .38+P D-frame sized gun, 3 to 4-inch barrel, 6 round capacity, I'd get three of them pronto. Sadly, that's not going to happen given what it costs to make a round gun.

J-frames on the other hand, fit me well.

I have a great soft spot for the 2.5 and 3" barreled S&W model 19/66's, this one I consider a great prize as it was liberated from rabidly anti-gun south Australian forces, it was virtually unused by the Aussie police agency that procured it in 2005....pictured wearing to different sets of stocks, Hogue Bantam, and Eagle secret service...

Egads! I don't have any K frames! How could that happen! Bad planning I guess! I'm going to fix that pretty soon, I'm going to buy a Model 19, a nice old one. Got most everything but a K frame, Js, Ns, Rugers, couple of Colts but that's no excuse. Last K I had was a Model 66 which I wore out. The top strap was cut half way through by the cylinder / barrel flame. I loaned it to a buddy's widow who needed protection from a crazy ex-boyfriend. She shot the bastard with it after he smashed his way into her apartment. Didn't kill him, paralyzed him from the waist down. The NYPD got it and of course neither she nor I ever saw it again. We counted ourselves lucky neither of us was prosecuted or sued. My father had a Registered Combat Magnum and after he died I inherited it. It had previously belonged to Bill Jordan who in a moment of weakness sold it to my father. I sold it back to Jordan as he wanted it back pretty bad. Part of the deal was I got to spend a couple of days with him in Texas. Well worth the loss of a valuable revolver.

Here are a couple of K's, a 14-3, and a 17-2. The 17 is a bit rough cosmetically, and the cylinder hand had been installed incorrectly by the previous owner, so there's some firing pin dings in the back of the cylinder, but after some tlc it shoots great. Still, I'm always on the look out for a nicer replacement for it. The Masterpieces are the epitome of what a target gun should be, amazing single action trigger, wonderful sights and 100x more accurate than the clutz pulling the trigger, my favorite guns for spending a day plinking in the field.

Long live the K frame!
I started my career with a K frame 31 years ago. A model 66 I was allowed to buy when I retired from that first agency.
I bought my first K in 1977 from a police supply store for $164.
That first is a model 15 that is still in the box with the Magna grips and a set of the original Goncalo Alves target grips I paid a few dollars extra for. They don't have the speed loader cut out on them!
The original receipt is in the box too.
My daughter has been trying to take that 66 and put it in a shadow box with a badge and pictures of me wearing it in 1980 standing in front of my brand new PD '80 Dodge Fury II with two red gumballs and a siren on the overhead bar.....
It's not ready for that yet!

I'm looking for a 2" model 15, blue....

We still occasionally have a revolver day at the range. We have a whole new generation of shooters who have never experienced them and are losing out on half the fun.

Thanks for doing that. I talk to young people all the time that have never even fired a revolver. It's a shame. They seem to think they have no place in defensive use. They're quite wrong.

As I've said before, there were many times in a room full of off duty cops, I was the only one carrying, with my "inadequate" little Airweight, because the tactical gurus I was working with left their 1911's, Hi Powers, .357's, etc., in the car, because it was a pain to carry, when they were "just out having a beer", at a wedding, etc.

My first duty gun was a K Frame (model 66). Recently I had occasion to shoot one again - at length; 30 years ago I was a proficient double action shooter - but not any more.

Yes, my heart has been pierced by a K frame, but, alas, she belongs to another and my love burns as a sad and single flame.
Why Santa brought this to my son and not me I will never know.

A buddy of mine sold this to me for $225. He didn't like the fact that the nickle was starting to come off around the grip. I told him that is just going to happen on a 50+ year old gun but he insisted on getting rid of it. :D

Really guys? What kind of low down, dirty, no good, egg suckin', chicken stealin', commie dog doesn't love the K Frame?

I cut my teeth as a baby cop with a 5" Model 10 pencil barrel at the Academy.

The day I graduated, I strapped on a Model 19 which I carried until we went to Glock in 1991.

I still shoot, train, compete with, and carry a K Frame pretty often.

They are, to my mind, the finest example of a fighting wheelgun EVER.

Yup.

I played around with N frames, L frames, a Python, a Diamondback, and Rugers, but my best shooting was always with a good K.

I just wish I still had the eyesight I had in those days, when the X ring at 50 looked as big as a loaf of bread.....

I had a 686+ 7 shot in 357 that I used for bowling pin shoots. It was a great gun. I had a Wichita slab put on it for weight. I loved that gun. I wish I had it today but I went with the 8 shot 627's N frame when they came out.

Gotta love K's. Scored a 66-2 about a year ago and it is quickly becoming my favorite for beating up in the local buds in IDPA. Though some do hand me my hat along with other things...

I kinda like the K frame Smiths. Here are a few of my three inch and two, two and one half inch guns. I have a couple of four and six inch K frames also.

I just picked up a used 65-7 for cheap the other day. It was a security company gun and had factory night sights drilled into the frame which I thought was pretty cool. The sights are at about 70%; I also checked with Trijicon who will replace them when the time comes for $108. BTW, the trigger is smooth as butter; every thing I've read about S&W triggers is true.

I got bit by the revolver bug this year and it's my third in the last month! I also picked up a Ruger GP100 (a tank) and a Taurus 85CHULT (a handful) and I plan on picking up a S&W 642 as an on-duty backup.

I actually enjoy shooting my revolvers more than my semi-autos. I never thought I'd say that...

If you think it's a keeper, consider having the front sight milled off and a dovetail cut. Then you can replace the sight yourself easily, and you'll have more options. I've seen several guns setup that way, and have been thinking about getting a couple of mine done.

One of the orange dot/night sight combo front's like Ameriglo does would be the Cat's ass.

"Bred for the alley"?

I think I just threw up in my mouth.....

Yeah, when the night sights go dim, who cares?

I bought my first K frame in 1970 and still have this 6 in m-19. One of my carry favorites today is a m-64 2 in with a factory double action only modification--spurless hammer and altered action.

It's a strange thing...

My favorite wheel to run is my 6" chromed colt python. Hands down. I have one.

I have 2 K frames. And like them almost as much as my laser beam colt.

My pre k(6") and 16(2") are strange birds. They get better the more I run them.

Guess which ones see more rounds?

Wait... let me pull my foot out of my mouth and your sword from my stomach.

As far as the python goes:
Nickle. Thought they chromed in the seventies, and I didnt do it, factory ordered. This was my fathers and it means more to me than any other weapon.

Yes I have a 2" 16. I have 2 airweights with the same barel. And NO, the 16 is NOT factory.

And the smiths see much more time, but since I'm not the ultimate superninjawheelgun master Mr. Miciulek would be jealous of that you obviously are I bow to you greatness.

I also have a soft spot for classic K-frames. I've got an addiction to the 2.5" 19/66's. I've got seven of the darn things (three 19 blue, thee 66, and a 19 nickel).

Here's an early pic of some of the collection:

Left upper is a 19-3 with Sambar Stag grips and a Tyler-T, left lower is a 19-4 with Ahrends, upper right is a 64-2 2" with Ahrends, lower right is a 66-2 also with Ahrends, middle is a 37.

I purchased this one new in 1992 - a Model 66-3 with a 3-inch barrel, manufactured in June of the same year. I purchased the S&W combat stocks at the same time, and had the pinned red-ramp front sight changed out for a post style sight - which renders a crisp sight picture.

When I saw it in the showcase 20 years ago, I had no intention of buying it because I already owned (and had owned) quite a few S&W revolvers. But as soon as I picked this one up and give it a look-over, it caught my attention; cylinder timing is perfect, the cylinder locks up tight with the hammer cocked, and there is zero play in the yolk. It is the best timed, tightest S&W revolver I had ever seen - straight from the factory. It has proven exceptionally accurate with the few rounds of 125 grain JHP .357 rounds I have put through it.

It's still a safe queen - hasn't been fired in 18 years and has never been carried, but it still gives me goose pimples every time I pull it out of the safe to admire it.

That 3 inch 66 is beautiful :D. I have a 4 inch 66, a 4 inch 19, and 2 inch 10. They all see some range time, my wife uses the 10 as her house gun. Love the K-frame.

As,I believe,Clint Smith said.."wheel guns are real guns". I presently own only 1 revolver, a Ruger 2.25" SP101 357 I purchased new last year. GREAT gun, but I do wish still had my old duty gun... an S&W Model 64 3" RB . I had it bead-blasted,charge holes chamfered....then SOLD it when I switched to a(free) Glock 19. I MISS that Smith. NO dopey lock, super accurate...i:mad:I'M GETTING MISTY-EYED!

The picture of the 3" model 66 pains me. I also bought one in around 1991-92? Great gun.

My ex-wife grew attached to this gun and ended up with it when we were divorced last year.

Don't miss the ex-wife. Really miss the 3" model 66!
