Magpul ASAP sling mount. Should I stake it to the castle nut?
If you want to keep the castle nut from loosening, yes.
The ultimate answer is definitely yes. I personally fired mine a couple times after installing such an endplate to ensure that I liked it first. Not that staking is permanent, just a 'measure twice, cut once' kind of approach.
When in doubt, deform metal to ensure proper function. This is before I knew what "staking" was.
You learn something new everyday.
For the ASAP or any other sling mount that replaces the end plate definitely yes, stake it

The question is why wouldn't you stake it. It's ridiculously easy and the tools, if you don't already have them, are cheap. You can get away with a hammer and a center punch or better yet get a spring loaded center punch. It's like a 2 minute job.
And staking isn't permanent. You can torque the nut off. It just keeps the nut from loosening on its own.

As it's been said before. Yes. Stake it.

OK, the sling mount plate is higher than the castle nut. They aren't flush. How do I stake 'em!?!?
I would its just couple of bangs and youre all good
They don't neccisarily need to be flush or level with each other.
You just have to be able to displace material from the edge of the plate into *one of the notches in the nut.
*One because that's usually all you can get with the ASAP before the wedges on the sides get in the road. Still, one beats none by 100%.
Oddly enough, or not, the instructions that come with the ASAP make no mention what so ever to staking. Just tighten it down and have a nice day.
When I put one on my old rifle I hit it with a spring loaded punch about 20 times to get the metal into the nut.it held great but was a bear to deform enough
