Anyone do this? Are there 'short' versions? I realize not being able to adjust has its dowfalls, but for ruggedness, this might be a good thing.

I ran an A2 buttstock on a carbine for a long time.

Works well. Besides the other things you mention it offers the longer action spring and rifle buffer and is a little smoother shooting.

I did it because I hunted with the carbine and the fixed stock was easier to shoot with precision.

Turkey back in 1999.

Sully stock would be my choice, though I don't see how it's more rugged than a quality carbine collapsible stock

I shoot with ith the carbine stock fully collapsed pretty much all the time, because I love my 4x32 ACOGs and have a few of them, they have 1.5" eye relief, and I usually have body armor on, both are reasons I completely collapse the stock. Once I got used to it, I shoot carbines with Aimpoints and EOTechs that way too.

Vltor and LMT SOPMOD stocks will give you better cheek weld and more storage than a shortened fixed stock, unless you're talking about Vltor's, RRA's or other fixed stocks.

They also make a shorter version of that stock -
