and I would like to buy/put together a simple inexpensive AR for plinking/putting holes in paper. I know you get what you pay for and have read up on what others like/hate. I am trying to get in one for around $600. Looking at JSE upper and Surplus ammo lower. Other thoughts? This gun could lead into buying building a better one if I like it. Thanks:confused:

Save up. Buy a rifle ONCE instead of starting off with garbage and buying something else. Youre just wasting money.

For 600 youre not gonna find anything anyone here is gonna back you up on

For 600 bucks I would buy the S&W Sport model. That way if you decide to sell it to buy a proper carbine, it will at least be a full rifle from a reputable company.

It's not that it could lead you into buying a better one, IT WILL lead you into buying a better one. So just save up a little more money and do it right, it's addictive. There is no way you could possibly regret doing this and if for some reason you don't like the AR then you could sell it a lot easier then a $600 AR that know one will want. Do some research here and then contact Grant and he will set you up with a nice AR. Good luck:D

.

I agree with BCmJunkie. Save a while longer.
You can buy a Colt for $1000 and it will hold it's value if you ever have to sell it. If you ever decided to sell your "build", I doubt you could get $400 for it.

Use the SEARCH function and read about all of the disgruntled guys that "settled for less".

But maybe it's just me...

BCM, Colt, and spikes all offer basic entry guns in your price range. Spikes has a mid-length 16" gun for $859 shipped, magazine and all.

No offense or anything, but its just a really bad and ignorant decision.

Say youre building a car. maybe a Corvette, youre using it to drive on weekends. You need the engine...But instead of getting the best one that you need, you get one to "get you by" untill you can afford.

Also, all you need is a few hundred more dollars, and again, instead of saving, you get an engine from a cavalier.

Doesnt make much sense now does it

Edit: Stop being impatient. Save and do it right the first time. No one here is gonna want to help you out with the POS rifle you buy after it fails and you open a thread about, "Whats wrong with my gun!"

I thought like that once. Then a buddy on another forum directed me here

I saved money and bought parts here and there, and ended up with a real nice BCM middy :D

Get this one if that's all you want to spend.

Save up a couple hundred more dollars and buy something like this from G&R Tactical...

BCM Blemished Lower Receiver with Magpul MOE Buttstock: $321 (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=LWR-BCM)

BCM Complete Upper Receiver with Magpul MOE Handguards: $607 (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=UPR-BCM)

Total for a complete BCM carbine: $928

Or....

This,

http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=MID-750-C

For $1064 complete.

If you cannot spend more than $600, wait. Do NOT get suckered into buying low end junk. You will regret it.

Good Luck!

Congrats on your upcoming purchase. The first thing I would do is look at the chart and more importantly gain an understanding of the different areas of the TDP which the chart is based on. Then figure out what is important to you but always focus on getting the most quality for your money. The Colt/BCM/DD recommendations are all excellent ones but they will cost you around $900-$1000.

With your budget of $600 you can still build a good carbine that has many desirable features and will meet your needs if you do your job on the assembly. Here is how to do it.

Buy a PSA lower for $79 and then buy a build kit from PSA for $480.

Here is the link http://www.palmettostatearmory.com/2252.php

Then buy a DD fixed BUIS for $70. The total for this build is $629 plus shipping and you have a very functional rifle with many of the desirable features such as a M16 BCG with HPT and MPI testing, chrome lined barrel, 1:7 twist barrel, and m4 feed ramps. The barrel steel is not 4150 like a Colt or BCM but 4140 will serve you just fine on any semi-automatic application and FWIW most firearms barrels are 4140 or a variation of it.

The build that I described would meet your needs and budget and is a quality carbine that can also meet any self-defense requirements you might have.

Agreed. Don't waste your time and money. Save, pick your shopping battles, and get somthing you won't regret or worse, turns into a money pit.
