View Full Version : Rubber-like coating for bolts/nuts exposed on inside of safe?

Long story short, I recently bolted my safe down. It's freaking solid as a rock and it ain't moving, but due to the way it was bolted, I have the end of the bolt with an attached washer and nut protruding in my safe. It sticks out about 3/4" on the inside of the safe.

There's not much bolt left exposed (by design, brilliant me!). The good part is that I don't have to worry about 1-2" of solid metal poking into my guns. The downside is that there isn't enough bolt left sticking out to fit a rubber bolt thread protector on to protect it from contact with other stuff.

Is there any rubber spray or a cover-and-heat-shrink type of material I can cover the bolts with?

Not clear on location of the exposed bolts. Are they in the floor of the safe or in the back wall?

I'm guessing the back wall, as floor bolts could just be covered with an insert.

I've seen a liquid goop sold to coat handles on tools, etc. that you might be able to brush onto the exposed nut/bolt. A couple of coats would probably do the trick.

Here's one brand: http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

I used a large wire nut.

Just cut a piece of rubber hose of the correct inside diameter and put it on. There are coatings available, urethane, silicone, etcetera but you would have to buy an expensive pound or kilogram and use an ounce. Devon makes both but you are looking at a hundred dollars or so for a kit.

I did find some small kits at McMaste (http://www.mcmaster.com/#urethane-casting-compounds/=e0jkvz)r.

Skyyr,

Get yourself some silicone adhesive/sealant or acrylic latex painters caulk. Squeeze it out, building it up around and on top of the bolt. Dampen your fingers and smoothe/shape it out to thedesired results. Let er dry and voilla, soft rubber protective cover over the bolt. I do this on my work truck when I bolt on new items, and it lasts for ever. Cheap too. Get a color that matches your bathroom, so you can re-caulk the tub later too. ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. My local Home Depot sells some plastic dip, so I'll drop by and pick some up, as well as some caulk. I'll try both and use whichever seems to have the best results. Thanks again!

you could just get a couple of pieces of wood or drywall, cut to size and cut holes in them for the bolt positions then put a thin sheet over top to finish the job. bolts covered and only lose about an inch of height.

other than that the Caulking will be your strongest solution, but the plasti-dip will work with about 5 coats.
