View Full Version : Question about handgun log book...what do you use?
I see that many of you keep track of the bullet count on your glocks and such, sort of keep a log. What kind of system do you use? Do you just write it down on a piece of paper, do you have a regular notebook that you keep with your weapon and just write down on it? Or do you use a specific log book. I am trying to keep track of what I do from now on and not sure what would be te best way. Thanks for any help you may provide.
Funny, I just finished writing in mine.
I use a small pocket sized note book that rides with the pistol all the time. An example of an entry is as follows.
9-11-11
61 rds American Eagle 230 gr. FMJ
4871 total rounds fired.
X300? Y
Holster - Raven Phantom
PS I also note maintenance and any issues encountered.
I have an excel spreadsheet with the gun, serial number, last time I shot it, and total rounds.
I also use Excel...

I keep a written log book in a small (like 4"x6") Fivestar notebook, which I then transfer track able information like drills, and round count to an Excel spreadsheet.

I have a regular notebook in my range bag. I note the date, number of rounds, malfunctions if any, replacement parts if needed.
Looks like a little notebook might be the way to go for the range and a spreadsheet at home. it would be kind of coo if somebody made a specialilzed log book too.

There's an app for iPhone called gun toolbox I'm starting to use. Keeps inventory, logs, maintainence and ammo storage.
I use Excel as well, with one sheet for each weapon. I list date, # of rounds, type of rounds, conditions, and have a place for notes. If there are any malfunctions I note the type and which magazine was in the weapon at the time. I also track any PM, repairs, or modifications on the same sheet

I use a small flip note book with different sections for each firearm. I note the date, number of rounds fired, brand and malfunctions. If there is a malfunction I note the exact round count and the magazine number.
I use my computer, open the word processer, and insert a table: 4 columns wide, and 26 rows using Times New Roman, size 12.
In the first block of each of the 4 columns I type, left to right: Date, Ammo, #, Total.
If there are any malfs, etc., that gets typed in the Ammo column.
At the top of the page outside the table I type the gun and serial number.
+1 for Excel

Hmm...I like your guys' additional detail, I may have to change mine up now.
I use a small 8x5 notebook. Each firearm I own has it's own set of pages within the notebook. At the top of each gun's section, I will list the: make, model, caliber, place of purchase, date of purchase, price paid and serial number.
Ex. Heckler & Koch
USP Compact 9mm
Serial # - 27-XXXXXX
Paid: $898.00
Purchased: 4/23/08 from Cheyenne Mountain Outfitters.
Then I'll log the rounds as I shoot them by date. I break it down to ammo manufacturer, bullet type and weight. I log all cleanings and malfunctions. I'll also log when and where I send the slide or frame out for work, like sights or grip stippling.
Ex. 4/24/08 - fired 170rds
100rds REM UMC 115gr.
50rds FED Am. Eg. 147gr.
20rds FED Am. Eg. 124gr.
5/23/08 - fired 280rds
100rds REM UMC 115gr
180rds FED Am. Eg. 124gr.
6/1/08 - Cleaned
6/12/08 - Shipped slide to Heinie for Slant Pro Straight 8's
6/20/08 - Slide returned from Heinie
I use the spreadsheet program on my phone. It is always with me versus a random notebook.
I just use gmail. sending me an email with the rounds of the day, date, and total....eventually you can delete old emails and keep the last..
I dont keep many details... it is just to know the total...
you can use the google doc too..
I tear off tabs of boxes of ammo.
I try not to get too crazy about every single round that goes through my guns.
I used to use a excel sheet to keep mine until my computer crashed and I lost all the data. Now I use a round count book to keep track of rounds through. I got them through Creedmoor Sports.

Using a Field Notes notebook

"Rite in the Rain" notebook for me for both handgun and carbine...any size will do depending on how small you can write.
This is what I keep track of:
Date
Range/Class that I shot in
Ammo Used
Ammo Count (for the day)
Running Total (ammo)
Then a "Notes" section below that that includes:
Malfunctions if any
Drills Performed
Things that I need to work on next time
ect.
I flip the notebook over and use the "backs" of the pages as my cleaning/maintenance log with the round count at which I performed the duty.
Excel spreadsheet, pretty much rounded to fifty rounds. Keep few notes for various ammo, that is about it.

I've used a note book for a newly purchased firearm for years, but will soon transition to a spread sheet.
My info: Date purchased, and cost, as a header.
Date, Rounds fired, Total rounds fired, malfunctions, date cleaned.
The last entry, I have been criminally negligent in filling in.
