By then Major Daniel P.Bolgar , AKA: L/W Papers Number 19 : Covers what is sometimes called the 2nd Korean War including the " crucial " militia ( ROK Homeland Defense Reserve Force ) , the US role , the Blue House Raid , the Kangwon landing by 120 NKPA SF, and the development of the DMZ defenses.
The book is available at:

A super summarized version of the book is available here:

Takes 2 clicks to get there.
Not bad for an error-net source , IMO.

The JSA Axe Murder Incident and Operation Paul Bunyan took place a few years later. The Kim Dynasty has periodic delusions of adequacy.
Two Americans were killed in the incident. One died on the scene and the other died on the medivac chopper.

www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axe_Murder_Incident.

Lt Barrett went missing for 90 minutes . During that period NKPA guards were observed behaving in a strange manner , passing an axe from one to another. The NKPA with the axe would disappear into a depression , then emerge and pass the axe to another.
Lt Barrett was recovered and died off his wounds on the way to the hospital.

Thanks for finding the shortcut.

Here's the Imjin Scouts website , by & for people who served in/on the DMZ from the 1960's through at least 1991:

www.imjinscout.com

Lots of good info concerning a part of US Army history that has been forgotten.

Speaking of which, I ran into a Korean War vet (fellow Marine) at the movies today; I made sure to thank him, and BSed with him while my girl was in the bathroom. Great guy.

Korea Times newspaper article , "S. Korea raided North with captured agents in 1967. "

www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2011/02/116_80936.html

Quote from near the end of the article:
"An estimated 13,000 people have been trained since 1951 with the aim of retaliating against the North's armed infiltration..... Some 8,000 reportedly lost thier lives..."

ETA:
Worth a click and a quick read in my opinion. Example:
Quote from retired 4 star General and member of Congress Lee Jin-sam about his actions when he was a young Captain:
" Dressed in a [ NKPA ] uniform , I opened the door of...the barracks...and tossed in grenades , Lee said.
"we killed all 20 soldiers there , including one who hid in the bathroom ."

Although not mentioned in that specific case , the folklore concerning ROK raids suggest that WP grenades were often the weapon of choice for attacks . Nothing says "Payback " like a WP grenade through the window of an overcrowded wooden barracks .
