Got my First Big Bore Rifle. It is an Interarms Mark X in 458 Winchester Magnum. I managed 12 factory 510gr SP's @ 2040fps before I had too much fun.

OAL 44.5", barrel 24", 8.5lbs.

For now hogs and deer. I've got some reduced loads of 405gr SP's @ 2200fps coming. Someday I'd love to hunt cape buffalo, nile crocodile, maybe hippo and assorted plains game.

Thanks for the compliments. I think it might have been stocked in England with the "Manchester, England" stamp.

Cool! I just got a 7mm-08 in, have to mount the Accupoint and get it tuned up.

Maybe go up north for some Brown Bear? ---YOU NOT ME WITH THE 08!

I personally love these bigger traditional calibers. There is quite a history of downloading the 458 to 45/70 levels for large game. This guy always has fun stuff; http://www.chuckhawks.com/reduced_recoil_reloads.htm. Many loads work well in the 350g range for hunting med game. Looks like a nice rig.

Touching off a round in that rifle will get your attention. Nice rifle. Years ago I carried a Winchester 70 in .458 Mag. with 500 grain soft points during a mining venture in Alaska...not that the power was really needed. But my buddy had advised me to bring a "big" rifle, so being young and full of vigor I reached for the power factor. He used a .375 H&H Mag. The bears left us alone, but moose would wander through camp once in awhile.

Hunting Shack Munitions loads a Speer 350gr FPSP @ 2500fps that I looked at too. The 405's were a little more sedate so I ordered those from Wisconsin Cartridge Corp. The rifle will be much more pleasant to shoot when I replace the butt pad. If you look you will notice it has a little curve to it and the top and bottom corners bite me. I actually have 2 bruises, one from each corner.

Beautiful rifle. My buddy has a Remington in 458. One day for "fun" we ran two boxes of Hornady Dangerous Game lods through it. They certainly get your attention.

Nice thing about .458's, is there's always guys getting out of them.

Bought these at the gun show last weekend. $65 bucks for all three boxes, 5 rounds missing out of one.

Not elephant loads, but couldn't turn down at that price.

Awsome deal. I would not have turned those away either. The HSM and WCC 458WM ammo isn't too bad at ~$2.00/round. Everything else is just way too damn $$$.

Just because you haven't seen an Elephant in the back yard.....doesn't mean they aren't there.......

I love the 458 Win. It's a great round and easy to load for. I had a Ruger No1 and a Ruger M77 with the slickest bolt action I've ever seen. It pointed like a good bird gun and was a sweet rifle.

I used the Rem 405's alot also and it makes for a great reduced load yet one that will knock the snot out of anything on the NA continent with ease.

I sold those .458's to finance other gun projects a while back ago but I intend to get another one day. For now my Ruger M77 safari grade in .375 H&H is my heaviest rifle and the finest product I've ever seen come out of Ruger.

How is the ejection on your RSM? I've heard they have issues when worked vigorously? Got pics? My reduced loads are still pounding out about 4300 ft./lbs. Basically 375H&H power level.

Good looking firearm. I love my .458 though I don't get to shoot it much.

Is that built on a Mauser / Browning A-bolt action? I did not see pictures of the bolt.

Hizzie

Standard commercial mauser CRF action. Action built in Yugoslavia by Zastava. Not sure where all of the work was done but it does carry a Manchester England stamp and various proofs on the barrel/action along with Interarms markings. Stock has a "whitworth" marked recoil pad. Front sight looks like a Williams Gunsights ramp and bead.

You know I never thought to take pics of the bolt. I guess I should have.

Round 2

Well I finally made it back out to the range. Unfortunately the range we shot at only had benches and no standing. I fired 14rds of the WCC 405's (2200fps) from the bench before I had enough fun. Oddly the 405's were perfect in regards to POA/POI for the "fine bead" hold I use. No issues with feeding, extraction or ejection and the floorplate stayed closed just like it should. Time to go to the gunsmith for that Pachmayr Decelerator.

My shooting partner was sighting in his Sako 300WSM and I lended a shoulder after he complained about the recoil and I saw him using a shot bag to soften the blow. After the 458 the 300WSM just tickles. He did take a shot with the 458 to his credit. His eyes welled up but he held in those tears.

A good day.
