Here are a few photos of my new little Ruger SP101. This is a nifty little revolver and is reminiscent of handy little 22's like the S&W kit gun. The fit and finish appears high and the stainless finish is nicely polished, overall. The gun seems to shoot pretty well (target photos later) and the eight shot capacity will prove popular with most users. The single action trigger is fairly short and crisp. Double action is long and heavy, as is usually the case with a stock out-of-box revolver.

Ruger's got another winner on their hands with this one!

Nice wheelie! I didn't know Ruger was making this. I know what happens next. This will make a dandy little gun around our home in the woods, and will go nicely with my wife's Remington Speed Master.
I think I'll surprise her and make her thinks it's for her. Thanks for posting this.

That heavy DA has been my experience with all 22L.R. revolvers.

The SP101 is a beefy little tyke. I can see this as a very durable trail gun.

Ruger just introduced this model. They did make an SP101 in 22LR previously but that model was a six shooter with fixed sights and a full underlug.

Does your wife fall for that stuff? Mine did for a couple purchases but has since figured me out. Now if I buy a gun "for her" she keeps it.

I took my new revolver out this morning and shot the crap out of it. I fired everything from CCI Mini Mags to 40gr RNL to Russian "match" ammo out of it.

The gun is fun to shoot and easy to control, as one would expect from a heavy 22LR revolver. On the down side, I find the factory grip too small and I had a hard time working the trigger in double action. With the factory grip, the tips of my fingers are nearly touching the backstrap. No biggy, as I'm sure aftermarket grips for the centerfire SP101 will work on the rimfire version.

Here's a cylinder of Remington RNL fired single action at seven yards:

Eight rounds fired double action from seven yards:

Sixteen rounds center mass from twenty yards. Eight rounds fired single action and eight rounds fired double action:

The gun is so dirty now you can see the headstamps impressed into the buildup!

Not bad shooting for using that massive FO front sight.

Ruger done good with the dovetailed front sight. It should be an easy matter to swap out for something else. And I assume it's just a matter of time before we're seeing some nice aftermarket options.

They always need a trigger job and some attention to internals. Unfortunately, they are a bit of a pain being stainless.

Just as a note, if you are referring to Wolf .22 LR as being russian "match" ammo, it actually is very very good .22, and not russian, IIRC.

Wolf isn't a company by themselves, just an American importer. While most of their centerfire stuff comes from the Tula/Barnaul ammo plants in Russia, I believe their .22 is Finnish or some other origin. It is good stuff. Their 12ga bird shot is also quite good, and not russian, either.

This stuff isn't the WOLF 22LR that's available now. I bought this ammo probably close to twenty years ago. I have it all dumped loose in an ammo can now but I believe it came in a box marked "biathlon."

This Ruger SP101 in .22lr will be my next pistol. It has jumped to the top of my list of firearms I want. My last range trip out, I was shooting my Ruger MKII and a S&W model 66. I was discussing with a friend about how I would love to have a .22lr revolver. My friend was shooting his SP101 in .357 Magnum. I always enjoy shooting his SP101. Ruger has answered my prayers.

is going to last far longer than a few of us combined.

I could really see picking one of this up as a trainer. I think Ruger made a smart choice with this one.

Time, and inflation marches on. The .22 lists for around $50 bucks more than the .357 today. Most manufacturer's .22's cost a little more than the same model in centerfire.

They always need a trigger job and some attention to internals. Unfortunately, they are a bit of a pain being stainless.

I've had action jobs done on a couple dozen stainless revolvers over the last 35 years or so. It's never been an issue with any of the gunsmiths that did the work. A model 66 that Bill Davis did for me in the 70's probably had the best revolver action I ever owned, though the Stainless Security Six bull barrel gun he built me was close.

Ruger just introduced this model. They did make an SP101 in 22LR previously but that model was a six shooter with fixed sights and a full underlug.

Actually, they made models with full and half underlugs, and they came with a rear sight that was adjustable for windage.

I no longer have mine, but this is what they looked like with the half lug.

I think this would be awesome on the LCR frame. An eight shot 3" that only weighs 15 ounces or so. Add to that a 22 Magnum option and look out!

Thanks for setting me straight. The only models I'd previously seen were the full underlug models.

>$500 seems very steep for a .22...

Respectfully, I've never understood the stance that a .22 revolver should be cheap--or at least cheaper than its centerfire counterpart. I'd expect the .22 SP101 to be more expensive than its .357 counterpart, as there is more machining and production time involved to make an 8-shot revolver vice a 5-shot.

FWIW I paid more for my 2" S&W Model 63 than I've paid for any other handgun before or since. It took me months to find, and I paid a premium for it (although I paid less than what they're selling for on Gunbroker). By my calculations it's the cheapest gun I own, as it has already paid for itself.

I agree. I really like revolvers and .22lr specifically. Shop around with the other manufactures...there are no inexpensive .22lr revolvers.

I was hoping the price on the .22 SP101 was going to be less than what they are asking. It makes you wonder if an inexpensive revolver would take away from Ruger's Mark III business.

It's priced slightly higher than the 5 shot, fixed sight version in .357.

Did you think it would be cheaper? Because the cartridge is?
