View Full Version : If my muzzle device is 2.2"
If my muzzle device is 2.2" and I'm going for compactness. What would I lose, if anything, by getting my 16" carbine barrel cut to 14" instead of 14.5" ?
Why would you go through the hassle of cutting a 16" barrel, having it re-threaded and re-crowned for minimal savings. That doesn't include shipping to and from. Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not. I just happened to notice that most muzzle devices are more than 2" and people always mention they're getting their 16" cut down to 14.5" and a muzzle device perm'd. Why not got 14"?
I probably should have put this in the technical forum since my question was technical (feel free to move it) in nature, I guess, of a 14" barrel with a carbine length gas system.
Remember that the threaded part of the muzzle device doesn't count towards OAL, as it will be mated with the barrel...a 2" muzzle device doesn't add 2" to OAL once threaded on.
What would I lose?
You would loose a non NFA weapon.
You forgot to subtract the threaded part of the barrel, the muzzle device goes back over those threads so a 2.2" muzzle device doesn't add 2.2" to the OAL.
Guess I wasn't using my head there. Thanks.
