Im looking to test out some Federal Gold Metal Match in the 175 smk variety.

I can get .308 @ $21 a box or 7.62 @ $20 a box.

From what I read online, the only difference is the brass isnt polished and the primers are crimped. Neither of which effect me, as I dont reload. Anyone tested this out? It will be shot out of a 1/10 .308 700.

As long as they shoot the same, why WOULDNT I want to save a $1?
Thanks,

-Justin

Eh, I'm no expert on precision shooting, but for what it's worth, I had slightly tighter groups with 7.62 FGMM versus .308 FGMM. It may just have been lot-to-lot variation though.

I'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about will tell us the actual difference.

In general, the 308 will run hotter than 7.62. Both will shoot quite nicely, just see what your gun likes.

Its opposite of .223 vs 5.56, where 5.56 is the hotter or the Military version is hotter in the smaller caliber.

...

I know the pressure is higher with .308 over the 7.62 but people were stating similar muzzle velocities? :help:

EDIT: I found this response from federal on the issue:

The 762 is loaded with a harder mil-spec primer and is best suited for
semi-automatic rifles. The cases are also built to military visual
specifications to show the iris/annealing mark on the case neck. The 762
is loaded to the 308 specifications but with cosmetic differences to the
case.

So with that spelled out. The primers shouldn't be an issue with the 700? I haven't heard of it, but will have to dig a little more.

Shouldn't be... A harder cup might be ideal. I know I get a lot of primer flow in my 700 with 210m primers and BR-2s.
