Picked this up a couple of months ago for backpacking and a back up carry. 21/2" barrel with 8 shots of .357 magnum and only weighs around 24 oz. I have taken it out to the range a couple of times and it shot tight groups at 15 yards. I am pretty impressed with it so far, I have it loaded with hornaday hollows. In the winter i open carry my USPF .45 and slide this hot little number right into my coat pocket.
*I have read about issues with the firing pin failing to strike the primer hard enough due to the drop safety S&W used to get it on the list for the People's Republic of California but fixed it and I am 99%positive this is one after the matter.
Next time I go to the range I will provide a more in depth report of it's accuracy.

Isn't that an N frame?
If so, that's a pretty beefy "backup". :D
I had one of the Night Guards that had poor ignition. Sent it back to S&W and they replaced the firing pin with the longer one it probably should have had to start with.

It is an N frame and yeah definitely a beefy back up! Lol I have about 150-200 through w/o any malfunctions but I know exactly what you are talking about with yours, S&W put a drop safety in this series and it was cause an issue

I actually remember selling those things for $89.00 back in 1989/1990.
That was very cool of your brother.
Yes it was. Still has the receipt in the box too...he paid about $70 or so I think. Just wish it had the magnum cylinder.

Here's a S&W 627-0 that I had worked on by Mark Harthshorne @ Pinnacle High Performance. The idea was to build a revolver for IDPA, shooting .357Mag/.38Spcl.

The guy at S&W that thought of chambering .357 magnum in a 12 oz, 1 7/8" barrel J frame revolver, is both a moron, and a genius.
Yeah I can not shoot magnums w/o having my hand shake for hours after. Following qualification I had to investigate a car crash. I remember trying to figure out why I couldn't write. I stopped and looked at my hand it was shaking like crazy. Most of my shooting with it is done with .38's. The cylinder release cuts my thumb too!
Any of you guys have a Smolt? Shot one for the first time a few weeks ago. We had a retired FBI agent qualify with us. He carried it in the late 70's early 80's? Any error in the time frame is mine. I don't remember that part of the story. And for a guy in his early 70's he could shoot!

Colt Police Positive. Had the barrel shortened, front sight regulated, cylinder chamfered, and backstrap stipled. The trigger was great, so it was left alone.

That's interesting Ned! Any other pics or info on that one? Very cool.
Here is a recent acquisition: A beautiful "N" series Model 58 .41 mag.

Now it's wearing a set of Patrick Grashorn elk bone slabs. They feel great. Holster is a Simply Rugged pancake made by Rob Leahy in Prescott and is actually not for this pistol. The floral carving is the work of a gentleman named Rick Gittlein and I think it is simply beautiful!! Have one like it coming for the 58 so I can show it off. My pics definitely don't do justice.

If any of you didn't know Smith and Wesson offers a rebate for active duty, retired, or disabled military personnel (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Category4_750001_750051_757803_-1_757797_757797_image). I bought a no-lock 642, submitted the rebate form and kind of forgot about it. When the rebate came in the mail yesterday there was a check and also a little something extra, a challenge coin and a nice letter. It's pretty cool when companies do stuff like the Nation's Finest program but I've never seen a company go to this extreme:
http://i.imgur.com/EqA6g.jpg
Anyway I mainly wanted to spread the word about the program but I also wanted to point out how great S&W's customer service is.

Pretty neat. The challenge coin is a nice touch.
I would edit the photo to blot out your address, just for ID theft reasons.
And thank you for your service to our country.
Cool. I'm glad to see that kind of support. Btw, I did the factory tour about 15 years ago, and it was well worth the time.
A nice hammer-less J Frame is tough to beat. Good luck with it; an excellent BUG.
Very classy... especially the RMO.
That is neat. There are several websites out there that have huge discounts for MIL, and I'm sure some for LEO. Those, plus the huge number of places that offer in-store discounts is really nice, I couldn't imagine serving in a time when the troops weren't supported so openly. Not too log ago I saw a post on here though that kind of made me feel bad, someone (who has a post count of over 1,000) was complaining about how MIL get all these discounts on top of the benefits and everything. I was surprised to see it coming from a veteran poster here. But it made me feel kind of bad because I enjoy a lot of the discounts even though I'd say I have yet to do anything worthy of them. I'm a dependent as well, so I know what military life is like and think that it is definitely deserved for some, but I don't know if it is for all - there's a big difference between some of the jobs in the military.
Sorry for the rant. Nice program from S&W either way.
First time opening up a S&W revolver for detailed cleaning.

No one really knows yet. I haven't yet paid Colt to do their archive service thing. Chances are one in a billion, but it'd still be cool to find out where it went. There's a pretty good story behind it. I'll PM you if you want to read it.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p288/snappydad/NModel58l.jpg
Now it's wearing a set of Patrick Grashorn elk bone slabs. They feel great. Holster is a Simply Rugged pancake made by Rob Leahy in Prescott and is actually not for this pistol. The floral carving is the work of a gentleman named Rick Gittlein and I think it is simply beautiful!! Have one like it coming for the 58 so I can show it off. My pics definitely don't do justice.

My newest acquisition, its a 642-2, the lock is dumb but Im not gonna touch it so Im not worried.
You don't have to touch it. There are plenty of instances where they seize with no user intervention. Disable it if you can, but don't leave it as is and believe you have "5 for sure"...fact is you don't, but you can probably trust the knife.

Nice looking grips! I didn't realize VZ manufactured revolver grips. I hope they might consider producing Ruger revolver grips at some point.

It's a 681, a fixed sight version of the 686. I prefer them to their adjustable sight cousins. I currently have two of them. The one in this picture I had the front sight milled and cut for a Novak front sight from a 1911.

Don, that Ruger Bisley is beautiful.
Can you tell me a little more about the grips? They look to be very nice stag.

They were on it when I bought it. I'm not sure who made them, but they are very nicely done stag, elk I believe. Comfort and style, it's hard to get both, but the maker did with these. They may be Sack Petersen's work. I have some done by him on the M58 in the pictures as well as a 640 and an SP101 and the quality is similar.

Excellent, thank you for the info. I'm thinking about working up a wheelgun for my uncle, and I am sure he would love something like those.

Check out Sack's website. He's not cheap, but IMO he's reasonable. Most of his single action grips are $200 +/- a few dollars, but he does great work and stands behind his work. Ruger's can be a PITA to fit since they had so many variances through the years, but you can send him the grip frame and he will fit them if they don't fit as they should when you get them.

Today at a LGS, I saw this incredible locally hand-made, functional (articulating, not firing) wooden replica of a .44 Magnum Ruger revolver.
