Need info on a Marlin 336

Hey guys, I'm trying to identify a Marlin 336W in a local store as either a pre or post remington takeover. Does anyone know how to tell? I heard if the Serial number starts with "MR" followed by numbers, as well as the mark of "REP" on the rear of ejector port side of the barrel then it is a remington made model. If it starts with 9 followed by numbers (dont know about the mark on the barrel) then it is a Marlin. The one I found has 9xxxxxx as a serial number, but it does have "REP" on the barrel. Im confused. Thanks for the help.

It probably would most likely have been assembled in the Remington plant then. That always happens during transitions - parts being mixed. Personally, I'd look elsewhere for either all Rem or all Marlin. Aren't the "W" models still the lowest quality build anyway?

From what I've read there is no difference between the 336W and 336C except for the wood used in the furniture.

O have a Marlin 336CS chambered in 35 Remington, I purchased it from the original owner who bought it in the early 80's serial number 13xxxxxx. I picked it up for $375, one of my favorite rifles its a bit picky in the ammo i have to use (it only likes Hornady leverevolution) and there are oly 3 major companies that make the ammo for 35 Rem the other two being winchester super-x and remington core-lokt at $.91 a round (cheapest ive found) its pricey to shoot.....but like i said I love the cowboy action and for the price i couldnt beat it.....I say buy it (depending on the price)
