Finally, got the rifle set up the way I want:

Rem 700 SPS tactical in .308 w/ 20' barrel
Leupold Euro 3-9x mounted in TPS super low 30mm rings
Harris 6-9" bipod


...all for a shade under $1k


Since this is my first bolt gun, i wanted to keep it clean and simple before any upgrades.

Can't wait to put some lead down range. Any ammo suggestions?

Also, what would be the max effective range of this setup? I opted for the 20" barrel because my local ranges (within a reasonable driving distance) only go out to 200 -300 yards. If i had an opportunity to shoot longer distances, what can expect?

Markm just went through the buying and building of this gun. He shot sub-moa and some .5 groups BEFORE he changed / upgraded trigger and stock.

The gun will shoot great and be a "Blast". :D

If you're going to shoot factory ammo, get the Federal Gold Medal Match line.. with Sierra Match King bullets.

They have them in 168 grain, but I don't know if they have 175s. 168s would be good to get you rolling inside of 300.

Black Hills ammo has crazy bullet runout. Fed GMM seems to be the king of factory loads. Don't waste your money on so called "match" ammo like PRVI.

Be careful with the bipod on the Hogue stock. The stock will flex if you pull on the gun. I just shot mine off a pack before I changed it to an HS precision stock.

A relatively inexpensive upgrade is the Timney trigger. 510 is the standard, but we went with 517s for the flat trigger shoe. I shot a few hundred rounds before I upgraded, but the Timney is worth it for sure.

Federal does have a 175gr SMK in the Gold Medal line. The p/n is GM308M2.
