AAR Grey Group/North American Rescue First Responder class

I have been wanting to take a medical class for a long time and I don't think I could have picked a better one than this.

I believe we had 17 students total with some coming as far away as New York city. There were some LEOs, former military, an EMT, business owner, a high speed insurance agent:D and a doctor attending.

The class began with the instructors introducing themselves. All come from a military background (Rangers and SF) with extensive real world experience. They were extremely knowledgable and excellent communicators.

About half the course was classroom with powerpoint presentations and a lot of discussions. We watched film of actual combat footage and talked about the leading cause of preventable combat deaths (extremity hemmorhage, airway obstruction and tension pneumothorax). We were shown how to treat them. The course was designed around TCCC http://www.narescue.com/Tactical_Combat_Casualty_Care.htm

We got to do a lot of hands on practice packing wounds, applying pressure bandages, tourniquets. chest seals and chest needle decompression. We practiced moving casualties with and without stretchers. We learned the importance of keeping a casualty warm if they had lost a lot of blood.

We finished up day 2 with a written test and worked trauma lanes. I didn't come away an expert after a 2 day class on treating casualties but I did gain a lot of knowledge and I now have the confidence that I can help someone with a gunshot wound until the paramedics arrive.
Recently in our area, we have had 2 competitors shoot themselves during competitions (neither were using Serpas) and having the means and ability to deal with it was driven home.

Each student got a Maritime Assault kit http://www.narescue.com/Maritime_Assault_Kit_(CCRK)_-_Black-CN3FE66CE4EB32.html?BC=!PARENTID!

and an IFAK http://www.narescue.com/Supplemental_IFAK_Resupply_Kit_-CNBA177E63417D.html?BC=!PARENTID!

I highly reccomend North American Rescue if you are looking for this type of training. Grey Group as usual did a great job putting it together. I'm looking forward to the Level 2 class.

The class is thumbs up! Like Amp stated the class attendants was pretty diverse, but the instructors weren't. They all came from high speed units that had seen extensive combat and treating TCCC was second nature to them.

The classroom work was informative and presented in a manner that was easy to understand. The instructors encouraged questions and discussion. They never made you feel foolish or ignorant when asking questions.

The hands on part of the class was great. We started by practicing splinting, packing and dressing wounds, tourniquets, and readying a casuality for transport. The instructors were quick to give praise and to stop you when making mistakes. They didn't belittle you, it was more like "no, this way works -- do it like this."

I would recommend this class for anyone! I'm looking forward to Grey Group and NAR putting on the level two class.

Damn, I wish I could have made this one, but i had a conflict that weekend. Sounds like a great class. A wise instructor once told me that you'll save more lives with an IFAK and some knowledge on how to use it than with a gun. I'm working on Paul to try and host this one near Charlotte in the near future.

Hey Jeff, I'm going to be in the area this Friday, and potentially Saturday, if you want to get together and take a look at the ranges you emailed about. Let me know dude.
