View Full Version : I need a Rem 870 replacement 18'' barrel?
I am changing my childhood first shotgun, Remington .12 gauge 870 into a home tactical shotgun and need a 18" plain brass bead barrel. I can find one anywhere and looking the best price on one. I plan on sending it to Wilson Combat for their Magic and to convert it to 3.0"magnum shells. I plan to order from Brownells a Blackhawk / Spec-Ops recoil reducing adjusting stock.

I wanted to get my well used 870 hunting shotgun insides replaced with new fresh parts so I know it will be reliable home defense / tactical shotgun. So I was thinking send it to Wilson Combat to be turn into a Combat shorgun.Or can I make it reliable my self. I found a Remington 18.5" parkerized 3.0" barrel at Midway USA on Sale for $109.99. What other parts do I need to change the Rem 870 to 3.0" magnum shells?

I was gonna say check out Midway USA they always have great deals.
I once needed an 18.5" bead 870 bbl and called and got one from Remington, but these guys also sell them (no experience):
870 12ga Barrels (http://www.aiptactical.com/Accessory_Sales.html), aiptactical.com/
Take it to a competent gunsmith and have your barrel cut down to 18.5"....or check pawn shops....they always have 870 barrels laying around and will sell them cheap. Then get it cut down.
All of my 12 gauge barrels are 2 3/4 shells are from the 70's or 1980 pre 3.0" magnum barrels.
I call Remington and priced a 18" brass bead sight ,3 magnum" barrel for $101.00 + $12.00 shipped = total $113.00

Being the owner of a Vang Comp 870 and having shot several Wilson 870's I say skip Wilson and go with Vang for any work you want done.

My Rem 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge was made in 1951.
I would keep the old shotgun as it is. The older 870s don't have the flex tab, and you will likely spend 50% of the cost of a new Police shotgun to outfit it the way you have mentioned.
I don't know if this would apply to you, but I wish I'd kept a lot of the guns I had as a kid. Some day you may think that way about your old 870.
What is the fuction of the Flex tab in a 870?

You can get barrels and parts directly from Remington:

This is for the infamous Remington jam...when a shell isn't pushed all the way into the tube magazine and backs out over the lifter/tab thereby locking up the gun. At least that is how it happened to me with an 870. I had to dismount the barrel to get the weapon back in operation. The flex tab allows enough give to cycle the action open.
It is one reason I like the Mossberg 500 open bottom design, but I still have an 870 Special Purpose that has the flex tab. I pay attention when I stick shells into the mag, and I've never had a problem with it.

I think I would keep that one as is. Used 870s are easily found in the $200 range and are usually still quite functional even if a bit dinged or scarred up. Which makes them the perfect project gun.
hig speed, keep the one you have and gust get a new barrel and then do some training with people who understand what needs to be done , or not done to make a gun work. Im just saying
My new 18.5 barrel was dropped odd by UPS on Monday. Now I am trying to dicide what to next.

You'll need to replace the ejector with one for 3" shells. That's not a home gunsmithing job. A lot of gunsmiths don't even do them.
You've been given the right advice. Buy a newer gun. You'll have at least the cost of one in your old one to convert it.
I have no plans to buy a new 870 for right now until I get the gunshop to replace my ejector, 9 miles from me that Remington told me that was on their gunsmith list. For now I will play with 2 3/4 shells.
I have a barrel that Hans did his ports and bore treatment on with a bead 18 inches long you can buy cheap if you would like to call me.
