View Full Version : Kydex mag holders
I was just wondering if anyone uses a kydex mag holder for their AR mags? Who makes a good quality one and does anyone make a double kydex mag holder?
Thanks
Assuming you mean side-by-side rather than stacked, I've not seen any in kydex. I've tried to make them and have found that they're so long that they have to be curved to work on a belt. That's not too hard to do on a custom basis, but varying body types, varying belt types, and differences in how people wear the belt would make it pretty hard to sell one double kydex pouch that fits all.
My preference has been ITW FastMags for belt use, but Blade-Tech makes some good AR mag pouches, both injected and molded.

Thanks for that one. Made me laugh!
Seriously, I was looking for opinions and what works for others before I go out and get some. Or on the other hand maybe they don't work and I'll be steered clear of them.
Here's another option from Ready Tactical.

From what I hear, these guys make some good stuff too

Those guy's in the magpul dvds do. Raven ones. I was thinking of getting one from raven. I guess you would only need one if you have a chest rig on that has the rest of your mags for your rifle.
This guy makes them on Sigforum. I have a couple of his pouches for other guns but not an AR15.

Cheap and fast

Edit #2: Disregard. There are enough votes either way - I'll just take a chance.
Question about ITW Fastmags:
Can you put 2 of them side by side in 4 columns of MOLLE, or are they a bit wider and 2 of them actually need 5 columns; 1 empty column in the middle?
Thanks.

I really prefer the offerings from Ready Tactical and KytexGear.....work great and don't take up anymore belt space than what's needed.

2 FastMags will fit across 4 rows of generously spaced MOLLE, if you are running them on a tight fitting rig they may not fit like that.

They'll fit side by side, but it's a tight fit and imparts a curve as they go around the chest rig. I took a belt sander to the sides. They fit OK then, but for my chest rig I ultimately opted for EMDOM IAP pouches.
Thanks guys.
I may put these on my DBT belt, so 2 side by side may work (curve).
Just thinking here...
I have two of the Safriland mag holders. So far so good, no issues yet. I have been using them for about 4-5 months. The tek locks work for my duty belt so thats one of the reasons I use them. Still want to try a fast mag tho.
The Safarilands have been fine for the past three years Ive been using them, only complaint is the lack of any adjustment system to secure the unit on different height belts. Stays on 1.5" belts fine, just a lot of yaw, if you could call it that.
Newer generation Tek Loks with the adjustment bars that simply pop into place are even worse. The bars will pop out, you will eventually lose them and you will be left with a pouch that sits very loose on the belt. If you go for a pouch with Tek Loks, avoid the newer generation ones if at all possible. Or get wood screws and screw the locking bar in place, as on the Gen Is.
Ready Tactical's offerings, as others have pointed out, take up only as much space on a belt as they need which is a plus and of all the J and C Hooks on the market, their belt hooks have inspired the best feeling of security in my gear.
As Hmac said.. Molding your own Kydex is easy as pie and a lot cheaper. If youre interested in that route just let us know and someone will get you the info you need. Especially spare mag carriers.. Very easy stuff.
Of the pouches/carriers I have tried.. I like to stick to my EssTac Wedge pouches with KYWIs. They take up no more room than necessary, the KYWI offers the pouch enough of a structure to securely mount pouches on top of it even when a mag is not inserted and most importantly to me, the design of the Kydex retention device allows it to be compressed by impact after impact without cracking. This has not been a highly prevalent issue with Kydex mag carriers or holsters, Im just nuts and I worry about the durability of a piece of plastic that may be subjected to repeated belly flops, in effect, as I drop to the deck, hit a door frame, etc. My two cents. Duty belt mountable, as well, with short MALICE clips.

I love you IG.
I've had mag holders made by Blade-Tech for both pistol and rifle mags and they have all been great. Highly recommended!

For belt use (1.5") I like the ReadyTac.
Works well with both USGI and PMags, and all mags in between.
For Molle or duty belt attachment, I have other preferences.
I have some other options on the way to me that I am pretty excited about though.
I didn't like the kydex offerings so I made something so I can attach my narrower Tacos to a regular belt.
