Proposed(read 99% going to happen) 2012 legal changes to Indiana deer hunting concerning rifles:

Maximum Case Length of 1.8 inches up from 1.625 inches
Minimum Bullet Diameter of .357(same as always).

What all does this open the door to cartridge wise? I know 450 Bushmaster will be legal. 458 SOCOM already was and got real popular.

I really wish they would make it any straight walled case. I'd love a 450 Marlin or 45-70 lever gun.

They probably have beaten this to death at indianagundouches.com.

Am I missing something here? I can't use a .308 Win to hunt deer in IN?

Heck no. It's pistol calibers in rifles basically.

Wow. That's such a dumb rule.

Pretty much, but the majority of Indiana is flat and even the rural areas aren't so rural anymore. I can understand their reasoning behind seeing as the vast majority of morons try to take 400+ yard shots... Make it any straight walled case(450 Marlin)

Oh well, that's what happens when u get the hippy generation in charge of government.....:suicide2:

I just started hunting in IN a few years ago. The pistol caliber rifle rule is a bit odd. 458 Socom is OK. 45/70 is not.

The 1.8 inch case length doesnt seem to add too many cartridges to the list. I would like to see them allow .30 . The 300 blackout would then be a great option

Hell ya, if I could hunt with 300 Blackout, I'd be smiling

Here in Michigan, we can use anything larger than .22 rimfire. Want to hunt deer with a .17 Remington? It's legal. The only stupid thing is 6 round firearm capacity (chamber and magazine combined) for semi auto rifles and shotguns, except rimfire. And no suppressors.

must be nice lol

So if it is a straight wall case, why does the 458 socom qualify? It's a bottleneck cartridge. I could see a 50 Beowulf being used under the rules.

Not being able to hunt deer with a .243 or .30-06 is just unAmerican.

It's not limited to straight wall only, theres a ton of wildcat cartridges popping up. Gunshop in Indianapolis came up with the 358 Indy, a necked up and shortened 25 WSSM that's getting same velocities and trajectory as some of the popular rifle hunting rounds.

The DNR just isn't thinking is all. Although, the majority of Indiana is populated now, not many places you can go an not have at least a couple houses within a country mile.

What about rifle rounds in a pistol, is that OK? (too lazy to look it up myself, because I don't care that much.) I shot a .308 Win XP-100 a couple of days ago that was scary accurate.

Actually yea, that's the stupid ****ing part. As long as it has no stock and a barrel less than like 14 or 15 inches you can hunt with what ever caliber you want to...... A 308 with a 14in barrel in pistol config would actually be not to bad....

That's exactly what I was shooting, a 14" .308. Using my 175gr SMK rifle load, I was tagging a 4" square steel at 200 with boring regularity just resting over a rolled-up towel on the rail of a deck.

Now that I know that, I might actually get interested in shooting a deer.

I'm planning to build a .300 BLK pistol for deer season this year. I have used .458 SOCOM but it's so damn expensive to shoot it's just not an option.

I was planning to build just a 5,56 pistol, then doing my SBR paperwork and shooting it as a pistol until i get my stamp.

BUT, i am going to do the build as a .300 BLK now. I am going to contact the ATF asking if it's 100% legit to do take an SBR and remove the stock, as well as the buffer capable of accepting said stock and shoot as a pistol.

If this is the case i will have a SWEET dual purpose weapon. A Legal deer handgun for November, then an SBR for range work and SD the rest of the year.

300 BLKOUT is NOT a legal deer round in Indiana out of a Rifle(doesnt meet the .357 minimum bullet diameter). Just make sure its on a pistol lower.

6.8 might be a good pistol for you to use for that purpose also, got a bit more power than the .300.

Ya know, it would be really retro-cool to hunt with an 1860 Henry replica in .45 Colt or .44-40. Hmm, I'm wondering if I might get one instead of a blackpowder rifle, especially as a teaching illustration aid for hunter education classes I teach.
