View Full Version : So I got shot, healing up, & I need advice

Got shot by a jackass riding in my Jeep on the way to the range while I was driving (ND). Took a .45ACP to the arm. A few months later and the bone graft took and I'm healing up. My friends at CavArms (great folks) gave me a Sabre lower as a get well present. With a modicum of time and hands to build with, I'd like to get a good upper for classes, plinking, and one accurate enough for some father shots back home in Wyoming.

I'd prefer a 16" midlength with a rail ready to go. I never used a mid length in the Marines but I sure like how the civilian ones I've shot shoot.

I was looking at the fluted, mid length 16" upper here (http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=22&t=366401) along with some iron sights and an Aimpoint but Armalite's Thanksgiving Sale (http://www.armalite.com/Categories8.aspx?Category=9f794ab0-7a08-44e0-85d2-34f1832de5ea) looks might tempting even though they quite have what I want.

Should I go with Armalite or spend a bit more?

Seeing as how you got the lower for free...I'd go with an LMT MRP 16" Mid Length upper. It's everything you are seeking. But it will cost you about $1500.00

You've had a great attitude the entire time you've been injured, and its good to see you over here.

The biggest question I can think of is how much you can spend. Its pretty easy to spend someone else's money, so without a ballpark figure, its hard to make a call.

I know you already have precision/ reach out and touch someone aspects covered, so are you looking for more of a blaster/ close in weapon, or are you looking for more of a precision rig out of this one as well?

i have the 16 in midlength Sabre upper with the 10in troy rail and flip-up/down troy battle sights. I shoots great, looks good, is very reliable, and will match the finish on the lower that was given to you perfectly. the only thing i would change is i would have bought an LMT BCG instead of opting for the RRA in it, no particular reason though just preference.

I'd prefer to spend no more than $800 for upper and BCG, sights and optic can be separate.

I hate to say it but I want a precision blaster; I already have a FAL and AK47 for regular blasting :D

Sounds like the Sabre is the way to go in my price range. Anyone disagree?

Sabre Defense makes a solid product.

Depending on the price, you may or may not be able to custom build one and grab the individual parts you need for less money.

for a $800 budget I'd probably do this:

RRA mid-length chrome moly bbl $190 (not chrome lined)
CMT charging handle $21
BCM M16 bolt carrier group $130
Daniel Defense A3 upper receiver $156
Daniel Defense 9" M4 Rail $310

Right at $807 not including tax and a gas tube and roll pin.

Effectively it depends on what you plan to shoot through this barrel. If say 55gr typically the cheapest ammo then 1x9 will be great. If however you plan to shoot long range 400-800 meters using 75gr and 77gr ammo a lot of the time I'd say 1x7 or 1x8.

I find that it works best out of a 18" or greater length barrel. For shorter than 18" I'd go with 1x7 since the reduced velocity.
