I found a bag of bolts at a local surplus store that are manufactured by Colt and I was told had been taken out of M16 BCG's. They are marked at $39.95 each and thought I would get a couple for spares. Sound like a good idea?

I'm guessing they're not new?

They are not new but there doesn't seem to be much wear on them.

I suggest you make a best guess on round count using this guide if you're not familiar with what bolts in various stages of their life cycle look like. You have to scroll down in that thread for pictures.

Then, consider if the deal still looks good considering the life span of an AR bolt and the fact that a new BCM bolt costs $70.

Also consider whether or not you'll have to replace the extractor spring and gas rings on the used Colt bolts and factor that into your determination.

PS. Checking headspace is advisable when putting a used bolt in a different upper. Do you have the means to do that?
