I have been working on this project for a long time and it is ready for you to look at.
The gun is a Winchester 1886 45/70 new production that I cut down.
Guns like this are not that common around my parts but they sure are fun to shoot and carry.

One of the things I have tried to get all my life is more rounds on the gun so I had a guy build me a side saddle and two-shot forearm mount that I have tested now and feel it is the way to go.

I adapted a scout rail to the gun and a steel peep and front sight .

I cut the stock to 12-inch LOP and set the gun up inside for slick operation.

I will get a sling on it next what do you guys think about my work?

Beautiful job, Joe! Of course, we've come to expect that from you...

The cartridge carrier setup is slick. I especially like the 2 round forearm carrier. Is the receiver carrier mounted with hook and loop?

The one I saw in his shop was indeed Velcro-based. You adhere the loop pad to the receiver with a special adhesive, if I recall correctly.

It is a velcro system that I had a guy custom make it is nice.
The system works on all the lever guns I think from this point on it will be on all my guns.
I had it in class with Hackathorn and he loved it.

Neat! That looks like a great solution.

About what do they run? Are they compatible with .30-30 as well as 45-70? I may be interested in grabbing at least a pair of the two-shot forearm holders to start with. One for the 336 and one for the 1895SBL.

The cost is $32.00 plus shipping apiece. It is the best setup that I have seen to date.
It will work with 45/70 and or 30-30 -- just keep them separate.
As it turns out, the side saddle is nice as it can be. I will be using one for a long time to come.

This is probably one of the neatest carbines I have ever seen. Simple and elegant, and no doubt it packs one hell of a punch. That micro looks right at home up there. I wonder if there would be any possible way to get an under-slung light on there, maybe clamp it under the barrel forward of the magazine tube so as not to protrude to either side? Maybe that would booger up the simplicity of this build, but a light would be icing on the cake. Its amazing how capable this 1886 probably is as compared to some of the the space-age designs and accessories you see around the forums.

Very nice weapon, sir.

You can run a light on the gun.
It just makes it a little less elagent for pics.

I just now saw another thread about one of your lever guns, the one with the offset mount with a SF G2 or similar off to the upper left of the forend....looks sweet. Great work.

It shoots as good as it looks. Thanks again for letting us try it out. I will have to get with you on making my guide gun into a "zombie killer". :D

As always fantastic work! It was great to be able to train with you down at USTC last week. Have you had a chance to try out the RCS gear we got while down there?

It was nice to meet you and share some time on the range as well.

I have had the RCS kit out twice and it works as expected I have Rob Haught this weekend it will get some hard use there.

The lever gun works with the same concept so I am going to have my guy do some more loops for the 45/70 it will be one nice hunting rig or road kit for up north.

Thanks for the complement the gun is a nice road gun I had it up with Ken and Rob 3 weeks back every body loves a short light handy rifle.

Damn that's a beautiful little carbine!...little being subjective...subjective to the caliber :D And I can't help but wonder if back in 1886 anybody ever visualized such a modification...

Somehow I don't think John Browning would be too surprised that his classic big levergun would still be "state of the art" in the 21st century. Critters don't evolve that fast, and neither does the nature of mankind.

After all, he did create the 1911 pistol.

Regarding the part where you mentioned that you altered the LOP, how does one determine what length is ideal for a given weapon?

And is it true that a shorter LOP always means more recoil?

But that looks pretty cool, I really like the way the finish and the stock came out. I bet it must be tons of fun to shoot as well.

I love your setup. I have the 1886 in the short rifle. Did you find that the change in the butt of the stock helped the shooting characteristics? I also have a 1895SBL and I find that one a little more pleasing to shoot even though it's lighter than the 1886.

I was wondering if taking the curve out of the butt of the 1886 and putting a pad on would even things out or if the pistol grip makes that much of a difference.

Thank you in advance for any insight you might have on this.

The shorter LOP and but pad make all the difference in the world.
It makes the gun handle and shoot much better.
