First off, if this belongs in the Custom Builds or some other sub-forum, I apologize and mods please move accordingly.

That being said:

I have accumulated some 'fun' money. Enough where I can pretty much build anything I want. After much deliberation, I'm going to add to my AR collection (that currently consists of a DDM4 only) by building my dream AR.

So I'm hoping I can pick the collective mind here for some ideas on what things I should be looking for, etc.

Criteria:
Reliability (most important)
Lightweight
Shorter the better
Accuracy

I'm just an average guy who loves guns and I want a true 100% reliable, no-cost-spared, SHTF, Oh the Noes the Zombies are here, combat accurate, ultimately kick-a$$ AR15.

Nothing is off limits, including optics (I'm leaning HEAVILY towards an 4x32 ACOG). Money is not a major concern but I'd like to keep it under $3,000 with everything. (Maybe I'm dreaming but we'll see.)

Also, it should be noted that I've never built my own AR and while I think I'd like to do that with this rifle, part of me thinks I'm too inexperienced to do it CORRECTLY. Could use opinions on that as well.

So that being said.....what would YOU build if money wasn't a huge concern for a rifle that meets these criteria?

OOOH! A buttstock that holds Hawaiian Punch and the VFG has Goldfish crackers!

That would be my dream AR

I was hoping to store tactical bacon in the quad rails so it could cook while I was shooting zombies. Do you think I can make that work?

1. Register a lower for an SBR
2. Research for 5 months on what you want
3. ???
4. Profit

for lightweight, a 16" lightweight midlength hammer forge upper with 12" rail like these:

Iron Sights: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XTComboSTD

for a lower you can go with one of those full ambi lowers, IMO dont really NEED it but up to you:

Wow, I'm surprised IG hasn't come in and slammed the door on this one! because "the building of dream AR's has been discussed at length, numerous times;) oh I guess it's ok as long as no one suggests he build a Spikes Tactical dream AR.

This one should be closed too. There are just too many lazy people not wanting to do basic research.

Get a Colt 6920, install a Centurion Arms rail system, add an Aimpoint T1 and Surefire Mini-Scout light. Then buy some ammunition and magazines.

my 16" LW middy setup consists of the following:

16" LW middy Daniel Defense Hammer Forge Upper with 12.0" OmegaX Rail
DD BCG
BCM Gunfighter Mod4 charging handle
Battlecomp 2.0
Magpul MOE stock, MBUS, MIAD grips, AFG, ASAP, RSA
Eotech 512

this whole setup unloaded weighs 7lbs 6.6oz, less than my friends unloaded without optic SCAR-L.

No dream AR is complete without a RDIAS.

Ok. I'll be that guy. You already have what you're looking for. Don't know what it has on it, but an optic and a light, and you're good to go. My very seriouis suggestion is to use some of the money on spare parts/complete upper and spend the rest on a class. A good class. Seriously. A week long class (with travel, lodging, ammo, etc) can be pricey, but worth so much more than the new toy.

You've got a great start with your first AR. Now put it (and yourself) through the ringer and have a blast. Pun intended.

What do you mean in inches when you say the shorter the better? You would probably not want to use the 4x32 ACOG on anything with less than a 14.5 inch barrel. First decide what you will mainly be using it for and don't rush on deciding , buy known quality and try to get it right the first time.

Thanks for the help everybody. I'm gonna request the mods lock the thread.

I'll hit the search function.
