I would like to install a railed forearm on my Mossberg 590 181/2 barrel. Can I get some suggestions on which one to go with from those who have made this modification already?

I am needing to mount a light.

Thanks in advance.

I used and liked the Surefire offering when I used one.

I like the Surefire one too, but not for $325.

I like the Mako one and it appears to be the same one Mossberg is offering on some of their new shotguns this year. What about CDM gear mount or GG&G, anyone used those?

I'd go with GG&G.

BTW, what type of light are you looking to use? You could look into a railed barrel clamp. I believe Nordic, Mesa Tactical and a few others make one. There's also ETA, the company that makes the Rhino rail.

I'd try to avoid manufacurers like ATI, CAA, Tapco, Tacstar, Choate, and Mako. If I wouldn't trust it on my AR, why would I want it on my shotgun?

I liked those Mossberg forearms with the Mossberg strap mounted to it but found out they do not sell them.
The only way to get one is to buy the model that has one installed.

I took apart the forearm and noticed there was a lot of room clearance
so i used small bolts and attached my own. granted it does not have the fancy embroidered Mossberg logo on it but it works GREAT and i really like it.
(not sure if you can see it in this pic of my 590a1)

I don't see why you couldn't mount a small piece of rail to your
forearm and then pick whatever mount you like.
(i'm a HUGE fan of GG&G!! they are ultra light and extra strong plus i recently lost the catch and thumb twist nut on my G2 mount and they sent me both parts for FREE!)

A small piece or rail, whatever light mount you choose then a couple
very small nuts, bolts, lock washers.

Pick where you want it then check for clearance.... drill the small holes and mount

lol i looked more and seen that what i suggested was kinda what GG&G sells. (only they have a custom milled fore-end)

There is also one of these...
Rail on one side/Sling mount on the other.

I was thinking of mounting a TLR 1s, but now I'm looking at mounting a Streamlight Polytac HP. I haven't found any brackets that I like and think the GG&G part is the way to go for me. I am looking on mounting this on my HD 590 with a 18.5 inch barrel. However, I also need one for my work gun which is a 590 with a 14.5 barrel.

It appears that a forend mount is the way to go when you have 590 with a 18.5" or shorter barrel. I found more options for the 20" guns.

I have the Mesa Tactical barrel clamp/mount with a TLR-1. I like it.

I'm a LEO and I also use a my personally owned 14" barreled 12 ga Mossberg 590A1 shotgun for work. It has the factory ghost ring sights and I've equipped mine with a Hogue Youth stock (12" LOP), a SureFire 621FGA Forend Weaponlight, a Blackhawk front sling adapter, a Specter Gear 3-point tactical sling, and a 3GunGear.com 7-Shell Side Saddle, which has a nylon side saddle with elasticized shell holders backed with velcro that affixes to a base on the shotgun receiver. This allows single-hand removal and attachment so that additional side saddle carriers can be carried on tactical vests or plate carriers and your ammo source can be easily replenished.

Yes, SureFire is more expensive, but they are the best lights on the market. You get what you pay for... Do you really want to go cheap on a light source that your life may one day depend upon?

I've pretty much been through them all with the exception of the Surefire forend. I ended up settling with this...it's an Ergo 3-Rail Forend. All metal construction with low profile rails. I am very pleased with it...feels and works very solid. At around $70, can't beat it!

IMO, don't get the Mako forend...I had that installed for a year and it feels very cheap. It also produces a lot of play...not good.

I know, Surefire makes great stuff, but I just can't justify $325 for a flashlight. With that said I'm not going to cheap out either. No NCstar or UTG stuff. I believe I can make a reliable light system with Streamlight stuff.

I carried a M3 for years, and have a TLR1 on my duty gun and AR. I have had zero issues. My buddy put a $500 Surefire light on his AR at the same time I installed a TLR 1 on my glock and AR for less than half.

I am definitely going to stick with a TLR, I just need a solid way to mount it to my 18.5" gun. It looks like I am going with the GG&G forend or the Ergo.

Thanks for the advice on the Mako.

I use the MAKO and I am 50/50 on if I really like it or not. In its stock form the quality and fit is fine but it seems like every time I shoot it or if a buddy shoots it, it almost always cuts into your hand/fingers. (I am a RH shooter so it always injures my left hand)

I am not talking about a minor scrape either. Don't get me wrong I suck it up and move on with it but in my opinion that is not really a good design if you ask me.

Now I am not sure if I am the only one with this issue as I don't really hear about it, so maybe I have a manufacture defect.

My fix? I just removed that rail and I use my taclight on the RH side rail and I am happy. If I were to buy another set up I would spend the money on the ERGO. Its a little more pricey but well worth it I think. Now if I could afford it the surefire no doubt would be my choice hands down.

Be careful with the clamp-on tube mounts. They can have a nasty tendency to move with recoil, and potentially block movement of the forearm. Apply with loctite, and monitor carefully.

Being that mine is a 18.5" 590A1 I don't think a magazine tube clamp type rail attachment is possible. For example mine looks just like the gun in the GG&G pictures above. Unlike the 20" guns my magazine tube is not as long as the barrel and there is not enough room between the forend and the barrel clamp to mount anything there.

I believe I am stuck with trying to figure out a forend mount.

I am liking the Ergo and GG&G units, but wonder if they would make cycling the gun more difficult. How are they working for you guys? Is your hand running into the light during cycling?

Thanks for all your advice.

Well I just pulled the trigger on the GG&G forend. While reading these posts this morning I decided to go to their website and check out the specs on it again. A soon as I clicked on it I noticed they've put it on sale, including a Polytac light $119.00. Considering I was looking at buying just the forend for $99 I thought this was a pretty good deal.

Thanks for all the advice. As soon as I get it I'll post up some pictures.

Magazine tube extensions are available... As are extra power springs... Even if youve gone with the GG&G already and are not going to use a clamp-on rail, extending the mag tube aint a bad idea.

I ordered the Surefire M70 a couple days ago. Should ship round the 14th, supposedly. If you'd like any pics or info, just let me know.
