I have been running my new 5R in .223 for about two weeks now. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 sitting on a weaver Picatinny base and Millett tactical bases. I have less than 500 rounds through it and she is dumping three shotters in less than a quarter inch at 100 yards. The five shotters are up around the .7" range. I'm using the Sierra 60 grain varmiteer with 22.8 grains of AA 2460. It's a keeper. I shot the groups below on Saturday. The conditions were ideal with no wind. The only limitation was the big loose nut behind the scope. This one is a keeper. It is a sweet little caliber that I can shoot all day long without taking a beating.

Sounds like you definately have a keeper on your hands, hopefully with some more load development and practice you can suck those groups down even tighter.

Id like to get one of these to practice with in combo with my 308.

Get it out to 3, 4, and 5 hundo.

A gun that shoots good like that needs to stretch a little.

I wish I could. I'm stuck in hill country with 100 yard gun clubs.

I think I would have to shoot it, go find it, stick it in another charged case and shoot it again to get it to go that far.

We don't usually run the 223s out that far. 700 or so for those.

I've shot MK12's out to 1k. You're looking at around 19 MILS of elevation for 1,000M w/ MK262 from a 100M zero. The SMK's go transonic at a ~700M. They're pretty decent about staying stable but it's a challenge past that distance. It's a really good time though. I recommend it for a change of pace if you ever get the chance.

OP, sounds like a great rifle. The Varmints don't stand a chance.

You can get a 223 to 1k easy, well not as easy as other calibers but it'll get there anyway. I live in the hills to, the key is to shoot hill to hill for long distance in hilly terrain. Climb a big hill set up, shoot over little hills into side of next big hill, that how we always did it anyways.

Unfortunately due to high population density the other hill tops are most likely occupied by folks that are eager to return fire. I am hoping to find a farmer with a coyote paranoia and a lot of property.

I was able to get some range time today. I am still learning to shoot the rifle, cheek weld and all. 100 yards, no wind, and cold as hell. :jester:

Best damn full sized factory bolt gun you can lay hands on for under a grand. I had one on the opposite end of the spectrum to yours in .300 Win Mag. Thing was a beast, when my nerves would hold it would shoot 1/2 MOA all day with cheap Black hills match and the best 5 shot with handloads was around .35''.

It would be interesting to see if yours will shoot the heavier 77 and 80gr pills with a 1 in 9 twist. One day you're going to want to stretch its legs some and you'll need to be ready. :p

Here she is. She is still pretty stock. Below is her ugly sister. The AR is shooting three shot groups in the sub .2" range.

Nice grouping. Hope you can get out to a longer range and see what it will do. I have gotten a chance to shoot my Remy XCR in .223 out to 200. With a little breeze, grouping was about less than a size of a quarter but this was with hand loads.

What is the twist rate of your barrel and what bullet and charge are you running?

The rifle is in McMillian A5 stock and the barrel is stock with a 1 in 9 twist rate. The hand loads are made up of Winchester 748 powder at the weight of 26.5 and the bullets are 55g with the OAC of 2.214. I know it must seems that I have too much much time on my hand.

I was running 22.8 grains of AA 2460 behind a 60 grain sierra hp flat base with a OAL of 2.258. I am going to play with the OAL a bit. I loaded some last evening to 2.280 which is just a few thou off of the lands. Google "optimal charge weigh method". It is a interesting alternative to the ladder method that most use. If you are interested I created a spreadsheet to calculate the incremental steps. All you have to do is enter the max charge. Check it out and pm your email to me and I will send you a copy.
