After a lot of searching, i'm still not able to find any sort of sizing chart for how much stuff you can fit on the top of the standard A3 receiver. I'm basically looking to add a magnifier to my weapon so here goes...

I have the following
1. colt 6920 w/troy forend
2. troy buis
3. Aimpoint Comp M4s on the factory mount. The optic is mounted as far forward w/o hanging off the end of the upper receiver.

My question...
Would I have room for the twist mount version of the aimpoint magnifier between my Comp m4 and my BUIS without having to get an DD Omega Rail for extra rail space or changing from the original twist lock mount? It looks like it would be ok, however I'd like to know if anyone actually knows from experience.

Thanks

I've got a PRO not an M4 but the only way I could mount a 3x behind it was to put the 3x right in front of the BUIS and then put the aimpoint on. Doing that made it too close to twist the 3x off the mount though. When I got a rail I just bridged the gap between the rail and receiver with the aimpoint and that gave me enough room to use the twist mount. Alternatively you could use a cantilever mount, that way you can keep it mounted on the upper and have the M4 far enough forward to use the twist mount.

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda wondered about the clearance between the 3x and the optic. Any chance a Larue flip mount would negate the issue then?

Never mount an optic on a rail system unless it's a monolithic upper receiver.
I have a pic of one of my 6920's with Troy BUIS, Aimpoint M4, and Aimpoint 3X on LaRue mounts.
I'll try to dig it up... here you go:

I'm a lefty*, rail is a DD Omega, this picture is roughly 3 years old (gun no longer in this configuration).
*Being a lefty, I have the flip mount backwards. For a righty the mount would be "pulled back" and flipped. I have to push forward to flip, hence the extra space needed.

I hope those help.

This has some pics of a few different setups w/ Larue Mounts.
I have an M4s and needed the cantilever mount to answer your original question. However, it looks like you could get away with their (non) flip-to-side aimpoint magnifier mount and keep your factor mount. It sits pretty far back, and everything would be quickly detachable... if that's what you're looking for. Also, keep in mind that you'll probably need spacers to line it all up.

well I think I found a reasonable option. The aimpoint cantilever spacer for the comp m4 (i didn't know this existed until today...)

http://www.opticsplanet.net/aimpoint-cantilever-extension-spacer-for-compm4-11970.html

got it for under $60 w/a discount so that should do the tick as far as spacing and give me the room on my rail that I will need. I figure for 1/3 the price of a completely new comp m4 mount this a good place to start. Of course, if it doesn't work, optics planet has a good return policy so thats all good. Thanks for all the feedback. Looks as though the question of 'space' has been adequately answered.

Just an update. The aimpoint spacer works great. See below
