870P Question or two...

Guys,
I'm considering an 870P purchase, probably go with the 18" bbl, as I really don't need the shorter 14".
I wish I could be more specific on the stock, and other options I want, but I'm just not sure at this time. I belive in KISS, but I definitely will be looking at different stock, sling swivel, forend and mag extension options, etc. You know, the basic 870P modifications that many of you do. I'm basically trying to determine if I should buy a stock 870P, with little or no extras built in, or if I should buy something like the 870P "MAX" which has a few extras already on it, direct from Remington. I'm fairly certain most of you will recommend NOT going with something like the "MAX", but rather buying a stock gun, and building it up myself...

So, with this all in mind, my questions:

1. What do you think about the Wilson/Scattergun Tech Ghost Ring sights? Are they decent, or is there BETTER out there that you would recommend? (these sights can be seen in the link above). I have read many recommendations on this sight, where many say to go with Ghost Rings, but I'm not sure if this is exactly the ones being recommended???

2. How many rounds does a stock 870P hold? How many rounds is an 870P capable of holding with modification???

3. Main question: Which model 870P w/18" bbl would you recommend for a little modification on down the road? ----What is the price I will pay? Is there a best dealer to order from, possibly out of state, or is this just a simple shotgun purchase that my local dealer might finally be good for? I don't think I've ever purchased a firearm locally, as the dealers around here never stock anything most of us on this forum desire, BUT if this is just a simple 870P purchase, I might actually use my dealer for a change. UNLESS you guys say I can probably find it considerably cheaper from someone like Grant, or other dealers online...???

4. WHICH 870P is just a nice simple model with 18" bbl, and black synthetic stock? Here's a link with a few more models, ALL of which have the "Speedfeed" stock I think (or most do), and I'm not so sure what this "Speedfeed" stock is, or how it really works/what it does, so I'm wondering WHICH 870P model comes with just a simple black synthetic stock, and 18" bbl??? http://www.remingtonle.com/shotguns/870synthetic.htm

Good timing on this post since I just finished my 870P. Now I understand you want a standard synthetic stock and 18" barrel. OK -- but now that I have a couple hundred rounds through mine (at least 150 slugs) may I suggest a particular model ? Remington's LE Division is now selling the Knoxx SpecOps equipped 870P with standard 5 round mag tube.

I absolutely LOVE mine. The Knoxx stock allows you to shoot the hardest hitting ammo all day - literally - without getting beaten up in the process. A typical range session consists of doing many rapid fire drills using only 00 and Brenneke Black Magic's and KO slugs. At least 25 of each and never had any discomfort. Its really amazing once you set your gun up properly and adjust the way you normally shoulder the weapon.

I'll post my pic's up and If its something that you might want more info on I'll be happy to list details.

BTW -- I have the VangComp system (VCS) on my barrel and it groups standard "off the shelf 00 loads" in 8 1/2" on average at 25 yards. :cool:

You would also have to spend $200 on a tax stamp and be in a class3 friendly state to run shotgun barrel under 18 inches long...

There is nothing wrong with the box stock factory 870 police guns... However, if you build up a base gun i think you will get more of what you want and less of what you don't...


So, with this all in mind, my questions:

I like the rifle night sights on the barrel better than the peep sights... that being said, if you are a peep sight on a shotgun kind of guy, the Remington factory combination of a XS front sight and a Scattergun rear does seem to work well... The Scattergun front sight is too wide for using slugs with any precision past 20 yards or so...

Stock = 4 rounds

+1 extension = 5 rounds

+ 2 extension = 6 rounds

I like the 20 inch barrel with rifle night sights, in a imp or mod choke ... And I would give GrantR a try...

# 4449 has the peep sights, #4412 has the rifle sights and a +2 magazine extension, and # 4971 has the peep sights, surefire light, +2 magazine extension, and a pistol grip stock...

Speedfeed is a company that makes after market stocks for a number of popular shotguns... They originally started making a stock that contained an internal magazine for carrying four extra rounds of shotgun ammunition, hence the company name. They now make their stocks in a number of configurations both with and without the internal magazine. The "sport" stocks do not have the internal magazine and the "type I" stocks do...

Hi Paul,

I went with the stock 870pMAX to begin with, primarily b/c a dealer had a good deal on one, and was GTG for an upcoming Awerbuck class. Nevertheless, with free time on my hands and an urge to tinker, I did end up making some changes prior to the class.

Regarding your questions:

I like the Wilson/SG ghost ring sights - very quick to acquire when mounting and in my opinion, afford a better sight picture than the LPA sights on my Benelli. The 870P MAX has an extra-large front sight post I believe, made by XS. Louis had us shooting slugs on a steel plate out to 75 yards; no issues with these sights at distance.

The 870P MAX came with a stock remington extension and clamp, which gives it 7 in the tube and 1 in the chamber.

I sent my barrel to Hans Vang for his vang comp treatment - had it back within a week. From what I understand, the 870 police line of scatterguns can be ordered by any dealer willing to - I was lucky in that I purchased one from a PA/Philly Remington LE dealer.

The P Max has the speedfeed IVs stock; shortened LOP and pistol grip. I tried the standard stock, but the pistol grip style fit me better. I will say however, the speedfeed pistol grip feels like a 2x4, blocky and a bit uncomfortable. With some careful grinding, sanding and stippling with a dental waxing instrument (soldering iron will work too), I re-contoured the grip for better ergonomics. (see pictures below)

Here are some of my other modifications/comments:

The Simms Limbsaver works really well! So well, I put one on my Benelli, which required some drilling.

I swapped the Surefire forend light for the model with the disable rocker.

I also replaced the stock remington magazine tube for a Vang tube, and added his stainless steel magazine follower. His follower has a hole which allows for tactile feedback when feeling for an empty magazine. Note, in class with Louis, an 870 with the factory plastic follower splintered, and stuck in the tube, jamming the shells. I also removed the sling plate attached to the tube, and went with a GG&G sling plate. I also added a Clarks magazine/barrel clamp - very simple and did not have the swivel stud like the factory clamp has.

Replaced factory safety with Vang's jumbo fat-head dome safety. 5 minute job that made a big difference.

Added mesa side saddle; I had to file down one of the screw heads that was 'sitting' a bit high, to allow the bracket plate to sit flush against the receiver, when the receiver pin/screws were torqued. I'd leave out the protective rubber backing.

Added a daniel defense receiver sling plate. Used a 3-point and 2-point vickers BFG sling, attached to the forend and both the buttstock and rear-receiver position. The 2-point BFG sling worked the best - the 3-point would interfere with the side saddle too much. The buttstock attachment of the sling worked best for me, keeping the shotgun more 'stable' when slung.

I basically radiused the edges of the 2x4, and reduced the swell of the frontstrap, just behind the trigger guard, as this hump made for an uncomfortable pressure point behind my knuckle. I re-stippled everything with a fine tip on a waxing instrument. You can see the big dome safety

Exactly. The person(s) who wrote the descriptions for Remington created a lot of confusion.

By the way, the factory descriptions "18" (7 shot ext.)" (as used in the 4421 and 4407) means exactly the same thing as "18" w/ 2 shot ext." (as used in the 4971). The parts are also the same.

Also, I have an 870 with the Wilson ghost ring sights, and another with the factory Remington rifle sights. I definitely prefer the rifle sights. To me, they are faster to get on target, and more precise.
