Little help please.

Can I SAFELY use Federal XM 193 ammo in an AR with a WOA barrel with a .223 Wylde chamber?

TIA

The .223 Wylde chamber is supposed to combine the 5.56NATO and .223Rem. dimensions, so you can shoot either round in the other without effecting accuracy. I dont know how! I do believe the 5.56NATO is slightly thicker and longer, you can use either one in the other chamber,"BUT" some yellow glass shooters believe you get pressure spikes using 5.56 NATO in .223Rem chambers throwing off their GROUPS .1 inch for example. For 90% of us shooters the differeance should'nt matter. BUT THE XM-193 SHOULD BE MORE EFFECTED BY THE TWIST RATE OF YOUR BARREL THAN THE CHAMBER TYPE!! This is my understanding of the issue, if I'm wrong in some way I don't mind being corrected.

Accuracy is the least concern when shooting 5.56 in a standard .223 chamber. The problem is the danger presented from the pressure increase. For safety reasons the chamber is most certainly of more importance than the twist rate in the barrel.

Hawkeye is correct here folks!

PRESSURE is the key factor with 5.56NATO ammo vs .223 factory ammo.
This is important folks, no need to be blowing up rifles around here.

I've surfed all over the place, and although the .223 Wylde chamber will accomodate 5.56 NATO ammo, my concern is with the effect the additional pressure may have on the rifle as a whole.

eg:
Excessive wear on the throat of the barrel.
Wear and tear on the bolt, carrier, etc.

I have yet to find a definitive answer to my query. If/When I find something on this, I will surely post it in here.

Thanks for the replies, folks!

The link below has been posted previously (credit to ar15barrels.com), it shows the actual dimensions of some of the various chambers in use. Please note that there are differences even in the "same" chamber name depending on who is producing the chamber.

Nice chart, losbronces!

Thank you, sir!

I've been looking for something like this!

Any idea where I might find some info on the pressure differences on 5.56 vs .223?

M855 is laoded to higher pressure than XM193. If I'm not mistaken, both XM193 and .223 are loaded to the same pressure (or very close) for their respective chambers.

5.56 NATO chambers are more generous in several dimensions, and it's for this reason that XM193, when shot through a 5.56 chamber, works fine. But when you take that same round and fire it in a tighter .223 chamber (shorter throat, steeper leade) pressures spike. Conversely, take a load that develops max allowable pressure in a .223 chamber and run that same load through a 5.56 chamber, velocity will be lower as will pressure.
