I just picked up a new Colt Rail Gun at the local fun shop today. I must say I am quite impressed at the out of box accuracy I was getting at 15 feet. I was not really shooting for groups but I was function testing more than anything else. If anyone has any experience with these i would like to hear about it. Anyway here are the obligatory pics of the Colt.

One of these days I'll add an old school Colt to my 1911 crew, one day. Nice pickup.

These are pretty exceptional pieces, no doubt. It's good to see Colt's back at the top of their game with a relevant, well-made product. I would actually like to purchase one of these CRGs myself.

I'm definitely in the position that a Colt Rail Gun is likely to find its way into my stable. Not sure it'd replace an Ed Brown 1911, but they're definitely sexy, and growing on me.

This is on my short list as well. The local shop has a lightly used one in all black for $899. Wish I was in a position to get one now.

ouch. Makes my $1200 I spent two years ago on the same gun sting a little.

Nice!!! I just discovered these and they are on my top 5 to get next. I want the all black Cera-kote version though. I love all black 1911's, they look damn hardcore!

Most of the feedback I am hearing on these pistols has been very positive. I checked one out lately at a local fun store and was very impressed. Yet another Pony I want for the collection.

The shop owner is a friend of mine, so $880.47 out the door. X300 sold separately of course! :D

Nice looking 1911. I noticed there is no checkering on the front or rear of the grip. How do you like the way it feels? Is it grippy enough?

I'll add some variety. Just picked it up Monday, haven't had a chance to shoot its yet. Initial impressions are good.

Congrats on your new gun, I want one too.

Almost bought one at a gunshow a while back but the rear sight was damaged. I offered the guy $100 less than what he was asking but he wasn't interested in dealing so I moved on. Oh well.

In the first picture, what is inscribed on the slide just aft of the cocking serations and forward of the ejection port?? Very nice, I am in the process of ordering one myself.

Looks like: "100 YEARS OF SERVICE"

Yep, "100 Years of Service", this being the 100th anniversary of the 1911 design. :)

Interesting that yours say "100 Years of Service". Mine lacks this engraving and was made in 2011 according to Colt.

Is your the all black version? They supposedly left that marking off those because it would not show through the Ceracote.

Mine has the stainless slide and does not have the 100 Years of Service marking either. I just got mine last week but Im not sure if mine was made in 2010 or 2011 though.

Yeah, mine is all black, so that makes sense.

I also heard the all black guns do not have the Colt pony on the slide either for the same reason.

I posted this in a thread a few months ago...

I’ve seen a couple of the Colt Rail Guns up close and have worked on one of them. The gun was bought brand new and had feeding issues right away... which isn’t to say they all will just that this one did. The gun needed and got a reliability job consisting of a proper barrel throat and feedramp geometry, reamed chamber, polished breech face, chamfered firing pin hole, as well as a tuned extractor and ejector. The barrel was also re-crowned and the goofy ambi-safety had its levers (especially the right side) narrowed to more useable dimensions and the whole part was de-horned.

A few things I noticed about this particular example...
Overall the gun would make a good base gun for a custom build. I’m not crazy about the front cocking serrations or the factory done sight cuts but overall the gun could make for a nice custom built rail gun.

Watch out hands and holsters ‘cause this gun is sharp! Considering the edges I personally would not want to carry it right out of the box but again it’s nothing that can’t be fixed or addressed.

Overall the barrel fit quite well for a factory gun. When the gun was in battery this particular example showed no play between the standing lugs and slide stop and the hood seemed to fit nicely (although not perfectly) in the slide. The barrel bushing was loose in the slide and did have fore and aft play but it fit the barrel well. I was a bit surprised at how well this barrel fit and that’s not a reflection on Colt but rather mass produced 1911s in general. With a good useable trigger this particular gun would likely shoot better than the vast majority of shooters.

Since I originally posted this I have bought a lightly used Rail Gun to use as a base gun and, while I didn’t shoot it before I started working on it, it was my understanding the gun worked as it should.

I noted that following the standard Colt script on the barrel hood is the “NM” marking, giving the impression of a “match” barrel. On this gun the barrel also fit very well for a factory gun, so the “NM” marking may actually be an indication of something. It’s not a perfect fit by any means but it was good for an "off the shelf" gun and I suspect with a good crown and trigger job this gun would shoot quite well.

The slide rails were also straight. Quite often I have seen Colt slides that have raceways that either taper inwards towards the muzzle and/or get narrower vertically. This slide was nice and straight which helps when doing a frame and slide fit and especially so on stainless steel.

Things I still don’t like are the ejection port flare and the location of the front sight dovetail. I can take or leave the front cocking serrations but the gun is still a box of razors and needs a de-horn.

I don't know if you worked on a older model that was sharp but the one I have is not. I have no problems with mine at all.

I've noticed the same as above. The edges could be more radiused if one wanted/needed, but none of the edges are overly sharp.
