Would a Noveske 10" barrel be too short to work with a DD Mk18 rail?

If you plan on suppressing it, yes. If not, no...IF you can get the flash hider/muzzle brake torqued down correctly

Correct me if Im wrong, but arent the older Mk18 Mod0s taken from cut down Colt 10.3"s?

Not much difference...IF...like Ironman said, you dont plan on running suppresed

Also,

I believe DD Mk18 barrels are 10.3" as well

Not planning on suppressing. Just gonna use a A2 hider

Yes, if you want the entire muzzle device outside the rail you need a 10.3" or 10.5" barrel.

If the muzzle device is of a small enough diameter to fit inside the rail and is not a silencer mount you could use the MK18 rail.

This will be a 300blk build. Will this fit inside rail? Wanting to build a Mk18 style 300blk rifle

On my DD MK18 upper the A2 flash hider flats for the wrench are almost in line with the edge of the MK18 RIS II rail. Not much room if any to tighten a flash hider down if you go any shorter than 10.3". Youll probably have to tq down the flash hider before you tighten the 6 bolts that secure the rail to the plate behind the barrel nut.

So I would be better off getting a 12" or 14.5" Noveske 300blk barrel and have it chopped to 10.3" or 10.5"?

You would be better off using a 10" noveske barrel and a different rail.

The DD RIS2 MK18 rail is specifically to be used with a 10.3" MK18 barrel.

IMHO, yes. Call Noveske and see if they'd do you a 10.5" 300 BLK bbl.

If not, the 12" cut down would be OK, but you might need to slightly open the gas port.

10.3 is the minimum you'd need to have easy access to the muzzle device threads. 10.5 is better if there is even a tiny chance you might suppress it in the future as that extra .2" allows the use of almost any company's mounts.

No, I wouldn't be better off since I already have a Mk18 rail.

I'll call Noveske and ask them.

You don't buy a rail until you have your barrel figured out.

You are approaching is project from a backwards way.

You are centering a build around a rail, instead of around the barrel, receiver, and purpose for the gun.

Very good Scott. I agree 100% with you here.

I have a few friends that build around certain parts.

In his defense though, I can understand, he knows what he wants the outcome to be and the rail is a big part of deciding what to mount and where.

Daniel Defense MK18 rails recently went on a Black Friday sale. One vendor had them for $280 shipped. Since they're usually $340, he might've had a good reason to purchase that forearm. Having a Noveske barrel made to fit his criteria isn't a bad idea. It just means a bit more time involved. $65 at ADCO, or see what John would charge to make this gun run. OP is going to have an extremely nice weapon before too long.

It might be a little bit backwards, but it is MY way. So until you send me some $$$ to purchase the parts, Ill keep doing it MY way. It doesnt matter how you build it or in what order you buy the parts, as long as it gets built correctly.

Parts so far. Purpose: short, compact home defense carbine.
1. DD Mk18 RIS
2. Larue billet upper and lower reciever
3. Troy micro sights
4. Lancer AWM mags

The A2 style flash hider will fit fine with the MK18 rail and 10" barrel, if you don't see a silencer in the near future I would not worry about using the rail you have.

The micro sights are too low to be useful on a standard AR in my opinion, I would use the standard height sights.

3. Troy micro sights

Thank you for your answer. Build will proceed as planned.
