I coulda sworn I just saw someone came out with a polymer open-top M4 magazine "Kangaroo" pouch insert. Im looking for an open top insert that doesnt have any bungee or velcro straps. Point me in the right direction guys.

Yes, I think those are the ones I was looking at. Will those properly retain a mag if inserted in the kangaroo pouch of a plate carrier?

nickdrak,
You may be thinking of the: S&S Precision Kangaroo Insert
It is pricey and designed to fit the kangaroo pouch of the LBT-6094A plate carrier.

I can tell you that KYWIs will work in various types of single-mag shingles that they weren't specifically designed to fit, but you have to be willing to cut them. I did that with an ATS 3-mag shingle, and am pretty pleased with the results.

I've only speculated on whether or not they'd work by being cut to fit a kangaroo-pouch insert; haven't tried it, yet.

So far, the S&S Precision one cited above is the only production one I know of; others I've seen (not used) were custom jobs. The concept works, but be prepared for the edges of the velcro on the back of the kangaroo pouch to creep away from where it mates to any loop-side stuff it's normally mated to upon closure.

I have some ESSTAC KyWi's and decided to slap a few in the kangaroo pouch of my PC one day just to see if it worked. Be mindful, a kangaroo pouch has Hook AND Loop velcro inside, and the KyWi's only have Hook velcro on each side. For them to work properly, you'll have to swap out one side of the Hook for some Loop to get it to work well. But like JSantoro said, the velcro is going to start to pull away.

If I had my way, I'd make a 3 mag standalone kydex kangaroo pouch similar to the S&S precision one, but it's a lot of work and getting the velcro to not peel away is the hard part.

Has anyone tried stuffing FastMags in the kangaroo pouch? http://www.skdtac.com/ITW-FASTMAG-p/itw.110.htm

I put Kywis in my tactical tailor mag pouches and mayflower kangaroo insert. They worked great in both locations. I would highly recommend.

FastMags are pretty thick, it'd have to be a helluva kangaroo pouch, size-wise...

Cut-down KYWIS have worked well in my Mayflower kangaroo insert. Photos can be captured, in the event there's still any interest.

I would be interested in photos. I did not cut mine down and they worked, but the retention is pretty tight (almost too tight). I would be interested how you cut them down (and how much). Would the way you cut them down reduce the retention at all?

Leftmost one in the photo goes in the rightmost mag pouch.

I think KYWIs are just shy of 2 - 1/2" wide.

L and R, I cut down the front to 1 - 7/8" wide by cutting about 5/16" off of each side of the front. Left the bottom of each KYWI alone.

Middle, cut down to just a skosh over 2", and I just cut from one side.

It's been 2+years, and I can't remember why I didn't just cut them all like the middle one, just that it was done strictly by feel. They retain every mag I own, and they stay in the kangaroo insert without any help; however, velcro and ShoeGoo can be used by anybody that wants the things to be unquestionably secured.

J, are you using the KYWIs alone in the pouch or in conjunction with the MF triple insert? Reason I ask as I have been running the my APC with PIG inserts (2) and sometimes they can be a pain to remove.

in conjunction with the MF triple insert

That's it. ^^
