View Full Version : Surefire X300 mounting options at 11 or 1 o'clock with FSB
Been doing some searches, but not coming up with any real definitive solutions.
I have a FSB with a DD Omega 9.0 rail and would like to buy a Surefire X300 and mount it at either the 11 or 1 o'clock position.
Looking for something lightweight and low profile. Obviously, it's easy to mount at 3-6-9 directly to the rail, but am looking for some type of offset mount that gets me closer to the 12 o'clock position on either side.
With the built-in rail mount on the X300, I'm not sure what you can add to it to achieve this. Or should I just consider another light/set-up?
Any suggestions? This is my first AR light set-up and I want to do it right.

I use the one on the right for my work rifle. I haven't had any issues with it in the past year of use.
Why not mount your X300 in the 12 O'clock position with your fixed front sight base, using a low profile solid one piece mount made of 6061 T6?

I saw the Haley Strategic mounts in the other thread that you guys are obviously referring to. :D
It's definitely a nice setup/solution. However, no X300 mount.
Any word or insider insight on this possibility down the road?
I've just had my eye on that particular light for performance, cost and weight.

Not a bad idea at all :) I must admit to being a 12 o'clock light / carbine gas / DD 12.0 FSP type of kool-aid drinker. It works for me, but at the same time I wouldn't write off a midlength gas setup.
It'd just take some creative mounting to get a true 12 o'clock in front of a midlength front sight block... and since it might be too far forward for smaller people, I'd consider running a pressure switch *behind* the front sight block.
EDIT: That Mossie Tactics 2400 mount looks like just the thing.

My advice would be that the mounting would be dependent on where your thumb rests and that is completely dependent on your hold.
I like using a verticle Vltor stubby (been doing it that way since Iraq - just how I like my personal setup for a CQB carbine). I have a gear sector mount on my CQB and I mounted it on the right hand side of the rails because that is where my thumb rests while using a verticle grip.
If I were not using a verticle stubby I would most probably mount it at the 12 o'clock because that would be where my thumb would naturally be located.
If you use a pressure plate (which I do not because I have seen them wearout/fail/accidental "on" too often) then you could mount the light on your head for all it matters. Haha... ok maybe not on your head but anywhere that the wires will not impede mobility and weapon sight acquisition.

Just a visual - This is my setup on my Noveske 10.5" 5.56 suppressed CQB. Bottom line is I recommend you trying out various holds and techniques, finding what you like, understand why you like using it.

It is and do far it's GTG. Great setup and a solid design. I'll try to get some pics up before too much longer. Maybe right after Christmas.
Just noticed another feature of the Mossie light mount: looks like you can adjust how high or low it clamps onto the front sight. Stick's photos show the rail on the light mount a bit lower than the top handguard rail. Should make for a cleaner sight picture over taller lights like the ones from Insight and Streamlight.
Is it wrong that a light mount is making me want to build a midlength? :suicide2:

I run Gear Sector mounts on my rifles (all have FSB) w/X300. Mounts up perfectly at 11 o'clock. Just activate with my thumb, caveman easy.

Personally, I'd want to try the Mossie mount in combination with a DD FSP-M handguard, or a tubular one with a cutout for the front sight block (are you listening, Lancer?). That way, you've got handguard around the sides of the front sight block to keep your hands from getting burnt.
Alternatively, run a pressure pad at 12 o'clock behind the front sight block and choke your grip up.
