View Full Version : Is non T2 (i.e. civilian TAP) good enough?

Given Hornady's own warnings about their civilian "Nato" (i.e. "superperformance") pressure at the gas ports (http://www.hornady.com/ammunition/superformance-in-gas-operated-firearms), it looks like my choice is the civilian 75 TAP "FPD" as I am not LEO. Then I found this:

The velocity on the civilian TAP 75 grain is uncomfortably close to the fragmentation threshold IMO. Should I be looking at the 60 grain TAP FPD to ensure fragmentation?

My AR is for HD, so the barrier blind loads recommended by DocGKR did not seem right for me but perhaps I should reconsider if I can not readily get a heavy fragmenting load with enough velocity to ensure fragmentation?

I'm pretty sure whoever you shoot with it won't lament the fact that they were "only" shot with 75 grain. Shooting a couple dozen feet down a hallway will give you about the most optimum conditions for fragmentation there are.

There are other manufacturers of good HD .223 than Hornady if you dislike the particulars of a load. Barnes, Speer GD's, etc.

A large LE agency here used the standard .223 pressure Hornady 75 gr OTM as a SWAT entry round for a decade with NO issues on soft tissue shots.
