Regarding surplus 54R ammo, are there any preferred nationalities? I need to replenish my stockpile for shooting my M39. I had a bunch of Czech silver tip that it shot very well but I haven't seen that for sale in a while.

It seems like Bulgarian and Russian are the only two flavors available currently. Any real difference between them?

I have shot a bunch of the Hungarian light ball. It has ran reliably and I have never had any types of malfunctions or stoppages. It is also quite accurate for what it is.

I have shot some of the russian but it has been less than 200 rounds so I can't really say much about it.

I like the Russian stuff because its clean and easy to find.

I believe the best surplus ammo (which has gotten harder to find now) is the brass cased, berdan primed corrosive Yugo M-30 ball with its 182gr bullet.

I'm saving the remainder of my Yugo stash for when I get an M-39. I just shoot the Soviet stuff with everything else.
