I have a SW 629 with a 6.5" barrel. It sat in the safe forever and I finally got around to shooting it. After shooting it I decided an aimpoint R-1 is what it needs up top.

First tell me if I'm off base, then please tell me where I can find the proper mounting system to do this.

You and me are on the same page buddy. I bought one of those $300 silver R-1s off Midway last year and thought it would be a perfect match for a stainless 629. EGW makes a picatinny mount that drops right in and replaces the rear sight. I haven't been able to take it to the range as I need to reload some 44 mag ammo. The setup is a little weird. My main concern is that the Aimpoint will get coated in carbon and I won't be able to see through it. I honestly haven't shot it to see if this will happen. The sight sits up pretty high and I found it difficult to find the dot quickly. That's a probably a function of me needing to practice with it a little more. If you already have a T-1 maybe try taping it on top of the receiver just to get a feel for it (without actually shooting of course. I'll try to post some pics here when I can find my camera.

I'd rather not remove the rear sight but I will if I have to.

I have 3 r-1's, unfortunately all of them are painted black. I might strip the paint off of one or I might just buy another.

The S&W Performance Center may be able to hook you up with a barrel that has a rail on it. I still don't think you'd be able to use the rear sight though/

I would go for it. My dad has a Ruger Super Redhawkawk .44 mag 9.5" barrel. He wanted an optic for it, so I bought him a Simmons 4x pistol scope a few years ago. I have shot this setup a little and I don't like all that magnification. Given that most engagements with a hunting pistol are going to be within 100-150 yards, I'd say a red dot would be a good choice. I wouldn't worry about powder blast or carbon caking up your lenses. If you are worried about it though, just wipe them down every 30 or so rounds.

I have an older version of the same concept. I stuck a holosight on a 6.5" PowerPort 629 (looks like the same one you have mkmckinley).

It is a breeze to ding steel plates at 100 yards from a rested position. I tend to find something to rest my back against, while sitting, and brace my arms and elbows between my knees to steady myself.

I do not have a pic of the gun by itself, but it is not hard to pick out from this pile of Smith .44s. I have the load it is zeroed for written on sticker on the side of the sight.

Before smith ever offered a M1913 rail for a revolver, I wanted a light for shooting at night. I had my gunsmith rig up a piece of Weaver rail underneath the barrel so I could attach a white light and laser. It makes for a killer night time bunny safari rig. When the jackrabbits come in to eat on farmer's haystacks you can really give them hell with a white light and laser.

I move kind of slow. I got a mount, never put it on, and now I've decided I don't like it. The picatinny slots were only at the front and the rear which limited my aimpoint placement. Just ordered a silver weigand mount. It has slots all throughout the length.

Sold one of the rifles I had an aimpoint r1 on, my ps90 (did pretty well and got more than I paid for it new!) and cleaned the black paint off of the r1. It came out looking like new.

Hoping to get it all put together next week, deer season's coming up.

Though this wont wonk on an aim point it is the best solution for a red dot on an n frame

Shooting4life,

Would you mind sharing what kind of mount your Burris is on? I'm trying to do the same thing with a Burris and my 627 PC. That mount doesn't appear to be a rail. Also is that a Fastfire II or III?

Great looking sidearm!

Keith

Finally got around to doing this, I think I'm really going to like shooting it this way.

mkmckinley, thanks for your pictures. I used them to determine the placement of my aimpoint as a starting point. Plus it helped me decide I liked the looks of the setup before I went to the trouble of trying it out.

I tried to sight this beast in yesterday, it's brutal. 4 cylinders full to get it close at 25 yards and can barely get it on paper at 50 yds.

It beat me up. All I had was prvi 240 gr jhp. I need to get some 44 special.

I used a Weigand mount to put a silver H1 on my Mountain Gun. I didn't get very good results, though it looks cool.

It shoots OK with an old Tasco pistol scope on it, but not very handy, so I didn't take it after deer this year.

I may get motivated, trim the front of the mount off even with front of frame, work out the accuracy issues and have a local Kydex Guru build me a suitable rig.
