i came across this while researching ammo: a "tactical" load from federal that looked very familiar. it is a .308 168 grain trophy bonded tip, or in this case a "tactical bonded tip". i cant really seem to find any difference between this round and the traditional .308 165 grain trophy bonded tip used for hunting except: plastic tip is blue rather than amber, they added 3 grains, possibly some flash retardant? of course, it is only for LE sales. i wonder, is this just for marketing purposes or is there some improved function in bullet design? much like when barnes re-worked their tsx to make the more robust 50 grain tsx for blackhills' load.

what is the difference? at over $2 a round i cant see myself buying any other than out of curiosity unless it does some thing truly amazing. am i missing something here? also a trophy bonded bear claw is always highly recommended for barrier blind ammo. how does a trophy bonded tip compare? from what i can tell they are pretty much the same besides the coating and the tip? if any one could clear all this up for me it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

The only cost factor I can see is the nickel case on the 'tactical' loads. I believe the hunting loads are normal brass cases.

If you look up the specs on the Tac load - you find bonded soft-point.

Perhaps Doc can give a better answer as I believe he has some connections within the Federal community.
