View Full Version : 5.45mm AK Ammo is Virtually Non-Existent?

I just heard from M4arc that 5.45mm AK ammo is virtually non-existent at the moment and damn expensive IF you can find it for sale. This narrowed down my AK buying choices considerably. I had been looking hard at a Vector built Bulgarian AKS-74 side folder. Now I just cannot justify buying one. Why would I want another weapon that’s hard & expensive to feed?

I'm back to wood stocked AK-47.

Depending on how you feel about him...Ammoman still says he has some available. If you can find a supply of 5.45 and a rifle, jump on it.

This is the real deal Soviet/Russian 7N6, mild steel core with the airpocket in the nose of the bullet.

How many thousands of rounds do you guys need? :D

Dinger..........everything is getting expensive!

Ain't that the truth!

I forgot that ammoman had some 5.45 in stock. Between him and K-var I was able to find it but the good o'le days are long gone :(

You might look at 5.56 AK's. Love my Arsenal. 5.45 is available, but costs as much as 5.56. I like the 5.45 round, but decided to sell both mine after getting the 5.56.

Also, bear in mind that some rifles don't care for the Wolf 70 gr. loadings out now, as far as grouping.

Some do, some don't, buy a couple of boxed before you stock up on a case of it.

The Sportsmans Guide and Shooter's catalogues both list 5.45x39, as well.

I'm sitting on about 700 rounds now, most of it in Bulgarian black synthetic mags.
I currently only shoot my Silver Bear in that calibre.

I'd like to pick up a crate of the 7N6 anti-personnel, but have been to busy buying 5.56.

I'm also trying to balance out purchases between 5.56 and 5.45 to get to where I'm comfortable that if there is a availability problem, I have enough to get me through until things even out...assuming they would. Otherwise, I'll own 2 expensive metal clubs.

The question becomes how much is enough. As I've never experienced a time where I actually had to worry about finding ammo, I don't have anything to guage it on. I've got 4360 rounds of 5.45. That's going to provide a lot of range time generally speaking...but is it enough? I don't know. I wouldn't worry so much if there was a US manufacturer making the stuff. Given how things are going with Iran and Russia's ties with them as well as Venezuala is 5.45 going dry up when we tell Russia to pound sand or vice versa? Are there other sources? Where's Wolf getting it?

I don't know, I'm almost talking myself into calling Midway and ordering a couple thousand rounds.

I've heard that K-Var will be out of their 7N6 pretty soon.
