So, today I had some time to finish up my project of turning my Troy Claymore muzzle brake into more of a flash suppressor. I did this because I like the way the claymore looks, but I really don't like muzzle brakes. Now it should have some decent flash suppression.

To do this I drilled a bunch of 1/8" holes into the body of the brake that covers 3/4 of the diameter around the brake. I didn't drill any holes into the bottom of the brake just like on a standard A2 flash suppressor. I had some trouble in the beginning with breaking drill bits, but with some gun smithing advice I cranked up my RPMs and everything went great. I used solid carbide drill bits from Fastenal and drilled at 720rpms. Also, lots of cutting oil is very helpful because the brake is made out of very hard steel. Pics are below of the process.

I drilled the holes in an offset pattern

I used some cold blue to finish the holes, it turned out pretty nice

this is a pic of the bottom of the brake which was left completely intact as to not kick up any dust when shooting in the prone.

Not knocking it at all, it looks cool.

But do you know how a flash suppressor works?

What I mean is that I doubt it will have much flash hiding effect, but I think you may find a decrease in muzzle climb.

I had thought about doing this with a very similar device (a Kies) for giggles, as a sort of DIY poor man's Battlecomp. Like Eurodriver, I suspect this will be more of a comp/brake than a flash hider. Curious to hear how it works though.

Yep, totally know how a flash suppressor works. It would of been better to mill some slots into the brake, just like almost all other flash suppressors are designed. However, I don't own a mill, I only have a drill press. So, this should at least be better than it was and it ended up looking pretty sweet.

I tried to be as un-condescending as possible in my post, I hope you didn't take it that way.

It may be too late, but I wonder if you could have used a thicker drill bit and just kept drilling enough holes in a straight line close enough together until you had a slot and just repeated that about 3 or 4 times?

Yeah... you should get more of a brake action from that mod.

Let us know...
