Huntsville officer dies from gunshot wound; suspect charged

Posted by Niki Doyle December 15, 2007 12:28 PM

A Huntsville police officer shot Friday night has died from his wound, Huntsville police said this afternoon.

The announcement was made at police headquarters on Wheeler Avenue that officer William Eric Freeman, 36, of Hazel Green, died this morning.

Police Chief Henry Reyes said Kenneth Shipp has been charged with capital murder.

Reyes said Freeman and officer Kevin Lambert had been called to investigate a traffic accident with injuries on Bailey Cove Road just north of Weatherly Road at 8:43 p.m. When they arrived at 8:51 p.m., the chief said, they found Shipp sitting on the curb.

As the officers tried to arrest him for DUI, Reyes said, Shipp pulled a pistol and shot Freeman in the head. Lambert began struggling with Shipp, Reyes said, and two bystanders helped Lambert subdue him.

Freeman was married and had five children.

A fund has been set up at Redstone Federal Credit Union as the Officer William Eric Freeman Fund. People can make donations at all Redstone Federal Credit Unions starting today.

You know, as long as I've done this line of work, I don't understand what would make people do that. I guess it's like Lt. Colonel Grossman speaks about, the 2% natural born killers.

Animals, life is better walking on two legs.

As a former police academy graduate I understand how dangerous police work can be. Words cannot describe the pain his family must be going through at this time so I will keep this short, my heart felt condolences to his wife and children and my God welcome officer Freeman with open arms.

After a guilty verdict, they should immediately execute by BULLET the shooter... As it is, he will be sent to prison and already have a bad ass reputation as a "cop killer." He should not have that luxury... :(

It's just all wrong...... 5 kids too.

As a Fmr LEO who lost a colleague to a GSW, I extend sincere condolances to the officers family and the department who must deal with the loss of a friend.
You never forget.

Rest in peace, Officer Freeman. :( Every time I read a story like this I can't help but think of my father. I can't imagine what his family is going through right now. Such a stupid, selfish thing to do - I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would do something like that.
