View Full Version : 300 AAC Blackout Sound Suppression
I have read/heard the 300 AAC is much more forgiving to the ears when firing suppressed, and even making it possible to forgo the use of hearing protection.
I'm personally beginning to put together an SBR in 300 AAC, and it will have either a 9" or a 10" barrel, which means more noise. I haven't found much info. for 300 AAC with the short barrels.
I'm looking at the AAC SDN-6 and AAC Mini7 suppressor stats. The SDN-6 is rated at a 25 db reduction with a 14.5" barrel. The Mini7 is rated at a 16.2 db reduction from a 16" barrel.
My question is would the 9db difference in effectiveness make hearing protection required while using the Mini7? And, would shooting a 10" or less barrel require hearing protection regardless of which suppressor is used?
Shoot subsonics through the SDN-6 and IMO hearing protection is not needed(outdoors anyway, I havent shot the combo indoors).
Love my 300blk, however do read up on this cartridge thoroughly before jumping in. Don't get it thinking the subsonic performs on par with the supersonic ammo. The laws of physics cannot be overcome.

I'm sure I wouldn't need hearing protection with any subsonic 300 AAC load, while using either suppressor. I'll be shooting full power loads primarily, and was just wondering about the difference between the two suppressors.
Maybe we still don't have enough sound testing done on this cartridge yet.

Comparing their 300 BLK numbers, the 762-SDN-6's (9" bbl) reduction with 300BLK is 39dB versus the MINI7's (16" bbl) 17.3dB, so the 'N-6 will be drastically quieter. The tradeoff is almost 7oz and 2.5" in length...
With subsonic ammo, an 8", 9", or longer 300 BLK gun with a decent 30 cal can will be very comfortably hearing safe. It should meter in the upper 120's. That said, some shooters still find that the action noise can be a little loud in their right ear, and for extended shooting sessions choose to wear a set of light plugs.
With supersonic ammo, you'll still be comfortably hearing-safe with even a vSBR in 300 BLK, provided you have a decent "full size" can.
The mini and micro cans are really just for taming muzzle blast, and it's definitely a good idea to use earpro (even just the surefire earpro plugs) with them.
Not sure of there is any solid data available on the Micro7, however the numbers I have seen don't appear to be hearing safe.

Thanks much for the info. Jason. That seems to answer my question.
I don't mind wearing EarPros if it is a little uncomfortable, since you can still hear conversation really well. Funny thing about the Earpros, when shooting an unsuppressed 16 inch and other guns, they don't seem to be enough, prompting me to put my ear muffs over them. Had a guy at the range tell me he had the same experience.
I use the EP4s, but have no experience with the others, but that's another thread.
For what it's worth. My Trident-9 shooting on a 9mm subsonic pistol host is much louder to the ears than my AAC 762SD on my 300BLK host with subsonics.
The 300BLK 220gr w/ 762SD = Holywood quiet. :D

Cool!

I have the 9" AAC upper & a YHM Phantom suppressor and the subs are amazingly quiet. Much quieter than I had expected and shooting outdoors w/o ears is completely safe.

I had the same experience. The rifle was a 16" with an adjustable gas block and I was pleasantly surprised how quiet it was with the factory Remington subsonic ammo.

My EP3's and EP4's are good outdoors suppressed or unsuppressed, and indoors suppressed, but i definitely need more if it is indoors unsuppressed.

It's not. These mini and micro cans are specialized tools. Unfortunately, there's no way around the physics of this stuff.
That said, the difference is still huge as directly compared to unsuppressed. It's very arguable that no 5.56 cans are hearing safe period, and they still have many benefits.

That's what I like about M4. So many guys that can offer real insight into what ever it is you want to know.
I've been flirting with the idea of getting a 300BLK supressor and I've boiled it down to a couple of choices. Is it worth to get an SD6 vs an 762sd?
